Getting the Mrs on the Back

I'm finding it easier getting her to lie on her back to be honest.

My wife doesn't mind going pillion. We don't do it much because one of us is usually doing something or one of the kids needs driving somewhere.

She did try riding a bike but was too scared.

Never really liked the whole pillion-thing.
I don't like the responsibility of it.

Plus the other stuff that goes with it....

And just like that, a leisurely Sunday morning ride turns into the grocery expedition from Hell.

Jess rides with me regularly, the multi is a great two up ride, and with all the panniers we’ve used the bike for weekends away together when all the kids are at the other parents.

I only have a single seat on the Thruxton so that’s my solo ride time.

Mrs Nutz has been known to get on the back of a bike, but a long time so.

She wasn't really a fan, but was enticed with the promise of only going out when it was warm and dry, plus the ride being accompanied by a pub lunch in a lovely little village.

We stopped going out together when the kids arrived.

I did thousands of miles around India and Nepal with the missus on the back and she loved it, we got to see loads of places we wouldn't have on busses and trains.

When we got back home I took her on the motorway and she hated it, she's not been on since.

For us riding the bike is most of the fun part and I think for them (generalising) it's just a means to an end/destination.

Jess’ main motivation was she wanted to share my passion with me, but she’s that type of lass, very empathetic and giving. She slowly got used to the back seat and prior to the speeding ticket was usually the one saying “why are you going slow?”

The ex had all her own gear when I met her from a previous relationship with a rider, but never ever once went on the back with me, which is indicative of that relationship in general.

When I was riding the Ducati 939 Supersport the wife had a new Monster 821. When we split up, the new girlfriend also has a Monster 821. I now have a BMW R1250RS so the girlfriend got her annual bonus from work and bought herself a new BMW S1000XR. Now she has 165 bhp on tap and I only have 136 bhp.
Two bikes is much better than one.

Nor had my girlfriend. She was 53 when she started. It took her about 5 months from starting training, passing her test and picking up her brand new 110 bhp Monster 821. The bike was three weeks old when she crossed the channel on it for the first time on her own.

You can make excuses or you can get on with it, depends on if you want it enough.

I don't think anyone is making excuses are they? Some people are happy to ride pillion. In fact I'd go so far to say that it takes more guts to go on the back rather than ride at the front.

It’s not excuses mate, we enjoy going two up, it’s good together time when we rarely get a break from the 4 kids, her uni study and work, and my fly in fly out roster. And she likes the excuse to be able to cuddle up to me for hours on end.

Like I said, if that works for you good on you. But not everyone needs to be told they have to do it your way. The thread is about riding two up, not ‘make your missus get her own licence and bike’
