I've just setup my birthday present from the in-laws... an Echo Show 8!

A complete surprise to me, Mrs Cav stuck it on our baby wish list after I nearly bought one on Black Friday. This couples as a baby monitor display for the monitor system we are getting among many other features.

They're great, I've got a show 5 in the office. It's mainly used as a radio but it links to the ring doorbell as well.

I did see the Ring functionality but that's not something beneficial to us at the moment. If I spent a lot of time in the workshop then I'd look into getting one in there for that reason. I'm always in the workshop when a delivery arrives!

I'm not sure if I can link it to my workshop CCTV though. That would be good.

You can get standalone ring cameras, and if you only want live views then you don't need to pay for the subscription. But to be fair is not much monthly to keep the recordings, though not sure I'd want a baby's room stored on there interwebs

The baby monitor system we will get has all sorts of features to it which is why we'll get that. Essentially it's a top down view of the cot but we get live audio stream to our phones and can open the app or look at the Echo Show for the monitor

Don't buy a cheap Chinese copy and do some research into security of the device you intend to buy.

Cheap (and not so cheap as well) baby monitors are riddled with security flaws and plenty have been known to broadcast live footage on the internet that is easy to find and access.

This one is the Nanit Pro, it's a highly reputable monitor but unfortunately, as with anything which connects to WiFi, it is hackable (including Ring).

Other than having a completely offline monitor I'm somewhat limited in what I can do.

It's not so much about your home wi-fi, but as much about as to how the device connects to the internet and the hosted service, and then again about how the Alexa app connects to the service to make the data available to your phone.

On a side note, how **** much

just walk up the stairs mate... Worked for us and both our kids are still alive

A bit of friendly advice. Please don't take this the wrong way.

But why get a system like that? All you're going to do is constantly check it, then constantly check on the baby to make sure the app information is correct, then stress yourself and end up stressing your child. You'll be forever fussing to make sure everything is perfect. That'll implant security and confidence issues with your child, who'll worry when it's not been checked up on and worry why it's being checked on all the time. It's amazing how much mental imprinting is done on your child in the first few months.

There is no perfect. That's why there's hundred of books and websites giving advice. There is no development tick box. Kids are kids. I've only had two but they were completely different in pretty much every aspect.

Trust me. You'll want some time where you're not worrying about your kid, otherwise you'll both burn yourselves out.

Speaking as someone with some experience on this subject, what Kwacky says.

With my first born I used to turn the wifi off when not using it and checked to see if he was still breathing every 15 minutes. With the others I adopted the close the door and forget about them policy. Much healthier for all concerned.

There's definitely a lot of that going on although I do think that being a dog owner has helped alleviate a small percentage of fear. I can at least keep a dog alive, happy and healthy. Also, we'll be buying most things new because we would like to have 2 or 3 children (I know, I'll see how we feel after the first) and we want everything to last all 3.

As for the smart monitor, this is cheaper than the one Mrs Cav was first looking into and to be honest, baby monitors are the thing I've looked into the least I think. We may not go for the Nanit.

For now we're sorting out decorating the room and finalising the furniture.
