Over 3 years ago you may recall I had an interview (and subsequent offers) for 2 jobs and I chose the job I am now in. The other job was with my friend whom I've done track days with. Back then I wasn't particularly close with him so I didn't want to risk ruining a potentially good friendship.
Jump forward 3 years and he's attending my stag do, attending my wedding, giving very generous gifts and being an all round amazing friend.
This friend retired yesterday and when leaving he pulled his manager (who is also 3 tiers senior to myself) and let him know how I'm feeling and that it might be worth having a chat with me.
Today this manager did just that. He explained what my friend had said to him and wanted to try and improve things for me. We had a lengthy discussion about where I'm at, how I feel about my job, how I feel about my team and the company as a whole, and then set about seeing what could be done to improve things for me and for others. He's asked about my willingness to travel and what roles I preferred in my rotation. He genuinely seems keen to help. I did explain to him that I've been requesting secondments for a while and that it's met with the same answer of "it's with my manager" (2 tiers senior to myself). I was very honest and did close the chat by saying that I didn't wish to speak poorly of my colleagues as I genuinely like my team and that my issue is strongly to do with my work.
I don't know if this is going to go anywhere but what my friend did is pretty awesome and it's really made me quite chuffed to be reminded that people care. Everyone needs that at times.
Great friends look out for you

Wow. That's special. So nice of your mate to help you like that. He didn't have to.

Re: Great friends look out for you
He sounds like a friend you should endeavour to keep in your life after he's been retired imho. Proper "good friends" can be one of the greatest assets available in life, however the better they are it seems the more predisposed we are to take them for granted.

Sounds like you could do with an equivalent person Kwacky, to "have a word in the relevant ear".Kwacky wrote:Wow. That's special. So nice of your mate to help you like that. He didn't have to.

Good to hear Cav, hopefully that conversation is fruitful.

Re: Great friends look out for you
He's a friend I will certainly be keeping in my life.
He owns a 2009 ZX10R and does all the trackdays I do. He isn't fast but he is first out, last in and will do every single session of the day even though you're certain he is knackered and no longer enjoying it! haha
Yeah hopefully it's fruitful. It won't be putting a stop to my job hunting (although Christmas has done that anyway) but if I can have a 6 month secondment elsewhere in the division I might rekindle my mojo.
I was very honest with this manger and said I was struggling for motivation, I hope he can sort something for me or at least give me an indiciation of who may have something going if I go and speak to them myself.

Re: Great friends look out for you
Cav that sounds very nice of him. Certainly keep him in your life as he really didn't have to do this, but also shows his weight in what he used to do, clearly people listened to him which is good. Fingers crossed this leads somewhere for you and you can start your new year on a high
