Round the world travel on a bike

I've read a few books about this recently, not necessarily all the way round the world but maybe to places you wouldn't normally think of to go on a bike.

This guy's books are probably the best i have read.

I've chatted to him a couple of times at shows and the last was a few weeks ago at the BMF show.
His last trip was to Iraq.... ... but he said the ordinary people could not have been friendlier and more supportive of his trip and in most cases would not allow him to pay for water or meals. Just goes to show that the people portrayed by the media are very different to the reality in most places.

Anyone else i have a hankering to travel somewhere very different on a bike??

I m not sure tbh Duke. I have friends who work in Iraq on civilian plants and they need armed guards so not sure the place is too friendly in general but I'm sure there are places with nice people.

I have considered working there myself but after reading the security advice I changed my mind.

That's because Western companies are targets. Most of the large cities are ongoing battlefields. Move away from the populated areas and you get the decent people

My mates are handful of people employed by a western company subcontracting for a huge Iraq national company but I guess there still western targets as such because of their western employer.

A couple places have massive security rings around them, which causes resentment. But the contractors need protecting. So it's catch 22.

Iraq has a massive murder problem. Most of it is Sunni Muslims v Shi'a Muslims. They get a lot of people from outside Iraq coming in to cause trouble.

I feel like I live my life on a very structured plan that consists mostly of putting other peoples' needs first. I'm also a meticulous planner by nature, a worrier, and a calculator of risk/reward.

I envy so much the ability of this guy to do what he did. Massive props!
