Insurance headaches!

Looking at getting a second, newer Fireblade in 2016 and did a bit of looking around at bikes and decided to check what it would be like to insure in comparison to my older blade...

Current blade: 2003 954cc valued at £3000 doing 12,000 miles a year = £203

Looked at getting a 2010 blade with low milage, 999cc valued at £6000 doing 12,000 miles a year and only two companies gave me quotes... the best was £1,500 and the worst £8,500!!!!

Is this serious?! I've got 6yrs riding (daily), two non-fault claims (hit by a drink driver this May and someone pulled out on me in 2012) but no fault claims and have an IAMs test pass. The bike would have every bit of security going.

Anyone else feel they're being priced out of having a newer bike?

When at the NEC show, I did check what the cost would be of adding either a 1199 or 1299 Panigale to my multibike policy at Carole Nash. I was a bit surprised to find it would treble my current policy to nearly £750 p.a.

No, but then I've never been one to hanker after "the latest & newest thing".
I'm therefore going to play devils advocate, and ask why.?
If your current bike is on its last legs, then fair enough.
But a 2003 Blade is still a cracking bit of kit, and the 2010 one is only going to do the same job for more cost to you.
Apart from the (slightly) updated looks & newer number plate what do you actually stand to gain from the exercise mate.?

In fairness I don't think a 2010 Blade is hankering after the latest and greatest.

Good bike but far from the latest and greatest imo. Swapping to a 1299 or rsv4 I could understand the difference in premium but merely swapping to a newer Blade seems mental they ramp the premium up so much.

Perhaps ring your current insurer and if the difference is equally as larger ask them why as it does seem odd.

My main aim was really just looking at a newer model with lower miles as I put so many miles on bikes... and don't want to ruin this 954 with overly heavy mileage (I want to use it solely for blood bikes next year, she's on nearly 50,000 already)

I love the 954, can't fault it... so I may end up just looking at another 954 with lower milage... its just a bit disappointing to be forced to make this choice - I am priced out of a newer model, and I don't think its very fair.

Best Ive had is 475 fully comp with 1000 additional excess. That's with 8 years no claims on a Big Bang r1..... Pffff

Keep shopping Ro. I really would be surprised if you can't get the quote down to something acceptable. It may take some searching and some haggling but I think you will get there in the end. I really can't see the justification for the increase in premium to be so large.

That quote was done on compare the market... will try calling up after Christmas and see if there is anything they can do otherwise will stick with just one blade and wait until I'm over 30!

On that note... When I was learning to drive/ride it was always "insurance will drop when you're 21"... then it was 25... then 30...

It seems every time I hit these "acceptable" ages for lower quotes the goal posts are moved... hmmmpph.

Ro multi bike polices are difficult in my experience. You have to do alot more shopping around and haggling but eventually you get it where you want it. keep the faith a d don't give in. For some reason it is harder to find a competitive multi bike quote but it is possible honestly.

That was a separate policy just for the second bike... and not including my current bike!!! So the total would actually be nearer £2000 or £9000...!!!!

I was quoted £1,000 to add my Z1000SX to my ZX6R policy. Ludicrous. Carole Nash did me proud.

Most places don't actually offer you a multi policy, despite what they tell you.

Bikesure, Swinton and Aviva have been good for me on multi bike policies.

Problem with 2 single policies is you can only use your NCB once so doesn't usually work out anywhere near as competitive as a multi bike policy.

Haggle hard too. I normally get a very competitive quote that is miles cheaper than anyone else and then half it.

You would be surprised how hard you can haggle and how low they will go.

Have you tried Bikesure? If you search Bikesure Insurance Services on here there is a thread from them. I can't seem to get a link working to the thread but a guy called Jordan who works for them posts on here sometimes. Offers a discount for Tankslap members and could be worth contacting.

I'm with Bike sure, they were the only ones to give me an acceptable quote, the rest wanted well over 1500 quid, no blipping way!!

As for the ages I totally agree I seem to be in the same situation , these insurance companies don't care for anyone. Does my nut in!!

I want a Blade as well same age but I can't get anywhere near an acceptable quote and I won't pay over the odds for it. Unsure who comes up with the prices but their arseholes

Insurance companies are there to make money.............. and nothing else.

I think because insurance is a legal requirement then we expect more but that is rarely the case these days.

I think we expect it to me more affordable for us as we are working hard and they are pricing us out of being able to own something that we want. Think all insurances need to go to a petrol station fill up a Jerry can go to a field, pour the fuel over them and light a match...but this is only my opinion...some might just want them to jump out of a building!!
