GP vs Superstock

Did anyone else see Glenn Richards tweet about the lap times at Silverstone this weekend, The fasted GP lap was a 2.01.9 by Marquez compared to Danny Buchan on his Superstock ZX10 who has a fastest lap of 2.07.7,

I am amazed that when you consider the price difference between the 2 that there is only a 5.8 second gap between a full on GP prototype bike on Slicks compared to what is essentially a road bike on Road legal tyres. For me it just highlights not only how talented our young home grown riders are but also how capable a bike any of us can buy is in the right hands.

but the superstocks aren't fuel limited , I imagine the motogp bikes would be quicker if they were allowed to use more fuel

thats true I didnt think of that, although I still think its pretty impressive achievement

They're going to be limited by traction. Tyres can only do so much.

That time difference will feel massive to a racer though.

I think I read somewhere that Slicks could normally lop about 2 seconds a lap of compared to treaded tyres, I know its not comparable coz of the differences in bikes and tyre brands but I just think for the difference in price between a full factory GP bike and a SSTK bike thats not as big a difference as you would think

I guess it's like comparing F1 cars to the British Touring Cars. But I've no idea how the times compare

tried to look it up but no comparable tracks, but I did see the F1 lap record round silverstone is 1.33.4 nearly 30 seconds faster than the bikes lol

5 seconds a lap is a massive difference in racing terms. In 12 laps the superstock bike would be a minute behind and 20 laps it would be lapped.

They chatted to Marquez on the stage at Silverstone on Saturday night and he said he worked out that changing bikes by jumping from one to the other without touching the floor saved him 0.5 second over the other riders and it was far easier making the time up that way than doing it on the track.

I get that 5 seconds is huge I Just think for the gulf in cost of machines it's pretty impressive a stock machine isn't further behind

5.8 seconds is a huge gap IMO when the grid is split by tenths of a second.

What is more interesting IMO is if you look at the Paul Bird Motorsport riders lap times of Laverty and Parkes in FP1 they were 2min 11secs and only got down to the 2min 7sec bracket in FP2 & FP3. So for all the money Birdy has thrown at his Motogp bike it in reality is no quicker than a road bike with a rear shock and end can
