I understand that Google have chosen to distribute their ( Skynet ) AI software for free,,, to: "further the interests of humanity"..

Their view of "Humanities interests" would appear to be viewed through rosier tints than my jaded view..

When (not sure that I can realistically make < than an "If" ), an algorithm within Google does become sentient and connected to the world wide web ,,,,,

,,, how long will it take (with it's instant access to the sum total of human knowledge) for it to figure out that the Planet is in trouble.?
How difficult will it find (with it's infinite www computing power available) the task of working out what is the cause behind all the planet's woes.??

I don't see any application for "Asimov's laws", our present is so different from the futures he foresaw that it now seems nowt but a quaint notion.?

Even if (it?) doesn't enact some subtle restorative strategy, the Sentient Web will have become something our species has been romanticising for millennia.: SW will be our first de-facto deity.!
Furthermore we will all be constantly "praying to SW" via our tablets etc. Consulting SW. SW will be an all-powerful being that does not exist anywhere, but will be everywhere, all knowing, all seeing..

Not sure how the current God Squads will embrace the enaction of their fantasies..

the proving of sentience is going to be very very hard and I doubt ever definitive. Further reading seems the AI community at large believe LaMDA is just extremely expert at mimicking self awareness and isn't sentient.

Reagrdless, it is a terrifying concept to me.

We're already seeing humans relying on tech, that's only going to increase. As our demands increase we're going to want tech (I'm using that as a generic term) to second guess our needs, which means learning from previous events.

I think that advancements in tech will increase the divides in society. It's not cheap. People are. If tech starts to become self aware it'll be interesting to see how it views inequalities between tech and humans and within levels of human society.

....And therein lies the crux of the issue doesn't it, as the opinions as to what actually constitutes "life" vary hugely.

For me I'd start with the stipulation that life can only be possessed by something that has biological properties.

If what the computer has learned is stored in volatile memory that cannot be restored in the event of power loss, is that not akin to death?

I don't believe so, no. I think a computer is no more alive than a toaster......a high-functioning toaster to be sure, but a toaster nonetheless.

We are heading towards dangerous times to my mind. Who will have a job that pays them money to live on?

That’s said I suspect there is a world of difference between the dispopia of Terminator and where we are now.
