Re: Putin and the West
Russian troops are moving in to Moldova, which is to the east of Ukraine. There's a strong Pro Russian population along that border.

Re: Putin and the West
There are protests in a few Russian cities against the war. Putin was hoping this invasion would galvanise support for him.

Of course there will be History at the end , it's just that we might not be in it .duke63 wrote:Assuming there is some history at the end of this.StMarks wrote:I wonder if history will dub him "Vlad the invader".
I don't believe we ( NATO/ the West ) will interfere in Putins plans in any significant way .
We may impose a few meaningless sanctions but little or nothing else .
Our lack of meaningful action will encourage the Chinese to advance their claims in the South China Seas and Taiwan .
I think Putin will eventually move on Latvia/Lithuania to establish his long standing aim of having a land bridge to Kaliningrad.
If China are successful in their moves it may back N.Korea in a move into S.Korea .
If the Western powers have still made no meaningful response Putin will move on Poland and it will be WWIII.
Happy days........

Re: Putin and the West
Spot on. I was thinking earlier if Russia and China are in cahoots for a joint world takeover. Bullying bastards. I also thought about N. Korea thinking we'll have a play at this war lark too.Jack wrote:Of course there will be History at the end , it's just that we might not be in it .duke63 wrote:Assuming there is some history at the end of this.StMarks wrote:I wonder if history will dub him "Vlad the invader".

My next door neighbour is Ukrainian. Her parents live in Eastern Ukraine and she was supposed to be going over to visit them in April, the first time in 2 years. She was on the phone to my wife in tears earlier. My Mrs is going to buy a bunch of yellow roses with a blue ribbon for her tomorrow.

Re: Putin and the West
Our best bet is to hurt Putin's backers. If they start to lose their money they might have him removed.

Well, I'm fairly sure you know that I'm not going to even pretend to defend Putin,,Kwacky wrote:Our best bet is to hurt Putin's backers. If they start to lose their money they might have him removed.

Before you wish him away, think long and hard about what would come in his place..?

Re: Putin and the West
Well, when he stepped back into the role of prime minister for a term, I'm guessing he had a hand in getting Medvedev into the office for a few years??
I reckon he'll still be an influence in a few years when he selects/proposes his successor - because I think that's how it'll play out.

I don't think there's many ex KGB officers with a hard on for the USSR waiting to take his place
There's a lot of people in Russia who want closer ties with Europe

Re: Putin and the West
Russians have been using Ukraine vehicles to get about. There's footage of Russian soldiers being killed and taken out of a couple of Ukraine vehicles.
It looks like the Ukraine forces have spent most of their effort retaking and holding the nearby airport.

Re: Putin and the West
NATO don't want to let Ukraine in and have left Ukraine on their own. What a sorry state this world is in. I suppose this is the same for Iraq back in the 00's albeit I was a child and didn't see Politics for what it is.

Russia has also closed airspace to any aircraft related to Britain.. registered, owned, leased or operated by Britain.

Re: Putin and the West
I don't know if they've blocked it per say, as much as not backing them join to receive support. The Ukranian Prime Minister has said that NATO are scared of Russia and no individual country within NATO wants to protect them.
