Fundraising - Tips & Tricks

A family friend's 5 year old Son, Vinnie, has been diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukaemia. He's an identical twin so his brother has also undergone testing. Thankfully he is clear but they'll keep an eye on him due to their identical genetics.

The point of this thread revolves around fundraising. Who's setup their own fundraiser before and do you have any advice or tips for me?

I'm thinking I'll try and do a cycling challenge and I'm trying to pick something tough but achievable. So far, the winner seems to be trying to cycle for the same amount of time as Vinnie will be receiving treatment. I'll just need to figure out a time scale to fit this in.

As for where the money goes, I don't know 1) how much I'd be able to raise, and 2) where to donate it to. If I can raise a strong amount of money do I offer it to the family to cover 4x 30 mile journeys every day and child care costs for their other 2 children? Or should I donate it to the hospital or to an associated charity? I have asked the mum for her input.

If you want to maximise the amount you are able to hand over to the beneficiary I would advise against using one of the established fundraising sites on the internet , use your paypal account for donations etc and publish your aims/goals/achievements on ALL forms of social media .

I'm not understanding what you mean by that.... what does that entail??

Say a child endures 100 hours of treatment through a course of 20 treatments, I would cycle for 100 hours and climb 20km. I'd have to figure out roughly how long this would take and set that as a challenge. I would aim for this to be offroad as much as possible.

Maybe I could turn it into 100kms, I'm not sure. I feel hours would be a lot bigger a challenge.

keep it simple and do a century , my dad and his cycling club raise money for air ambulance every year and people love the idea and challenge of a century ride

There's something to be said for simplicity. I'd like to keep everything offroad if possible so 100 miles will be a heck of a challenge.

My thinking behind what I suggested is that it's specific to Acute Lymphoblastic Leukaemia and therefore I'd hope it would drum up more support for the cause.

Fully agree with Perkles. A 100-mile bicycle ride is something people can get their heads around....100 hours in the saddle is approaching, or even surpassing, Tour De France levels of ride-time...and the fitness levels that go with it. From a monetary point of view, the law of diminishing returns will have kicked-in long before the halfway point.
It's three weeks of five-hour days.... think about that...

I just mapped out an approximate 100miler on Komoot... that's a lot of riding! This route has more than 7000ft elevation gain and takes me into Wales and over the Severn Bridge. The unfortunate thing is that nearly 50% is road riding.

You want it to have more off-road?? Why? - you can't get anything like the off-road mileage in as you'll be able to on asphalt.

If your going for distance at the marker, like 100 miles, I would always suggest a point-to-point rather that a circular or out and back. It's easier for people to relate to, especially so if you choose memorable points.
