Emergency Tax

I've been put on a completely hilarious tax code for high earners - technically not emergency tax - called 0T. It's for people who earn £123,000 or more. That isn't me by the way.

Has anyone gone through getting the correct tax code applied and a subsequent rebate? Is it simple?

Gov.uks phone number seems to be off the hook and their web chat isn't available so I'm in the dark.

I've paid what looks like 25% tax on 100% of my earnings plus £250 NI.

Duke will explain this far better than me, but it's your employer who sets up your tax code I think?

It's also something to do with timing and your P45. I'll let an expert explain it, but it's not unusual in new employ I think?

They had my P45 2 weeks before I started and I'm certain that had my correct tax code (it recently changed to the marriage one).

Didn't realise we had a resident expert though.. that'll be good to get their feedback

Give your new employers your P45 from your previous job and it should get corrected automatically next month. Otherwise ring HMRC nad ask them to correct it. Word of warning here, i spent just under 1 hour on hold waiting to talk to them this morning and then got cut off. I'm guessing the one hour waiting is where they get a bollocking so have their system set such that you cann wait that long.

You left your old job at the end of the last tax year and started the new one in the new tax year which always complicates it.

The other way is to set up an online personal tax account and get it changed that way...maybe!

That's probably why their phone line seems to be down at the moment then.

I ended employment Jan 31st with my last pay check at the end of Feb. New employment started March 20th or around then. The confusing thing about this is they had my P45 before I started employment so I would have thought they'd have it correct.

I'll give that link a go, I do have the HMRC app actually so can have a look in there too.

Ha ha, I laugh but I know its not funny, I had this for bloody years with one company, the tax code seemed to be different every month, the upshot I was paying way to much tax, however due to the rather large bonus that I could and would earn, it was not too much of an issue month on month.

I did get a big tax rebate in the end to cover i think it was two years worth of too much tax being paid!!!

Oh to have that issue now..... I wish, furloughed means penny pinching and no mistake.....

Yeah sounds like it.. its just surprising considering they had parts 2 & 3 of my P45 in plenty of time. Maybe they were late getting it in?

No I didn't get paid in March, I was due 5 weeks pay in this pay packet (although I don't get paid until next week)

You have probably overpaid tax last year too if you did not receive any pay in February or March
