I think it's the producers, directors, etc., wanting to make their own, hopefully better versions of the stuff that inspired themselves. Or at least an element of that exists.
And then they push it on us as the "new version for the new generation" blah, blah.
You want new ideas in film & television, foreign language stuff probably has a ton of untapped potential.
