nice ad , but why the current trend is to be more than 1000cc and not eligible for racing in most series is a mystery to me .

I think its getting more difficult to make a 1000cc road bike that also works well on the track especially as the WSBK rules mean the racebike has to be more like the roadbike.

I thought that having to build a homolagation special in order to compete would be costly and time consuming

I imagine the reason for greater capacity in showroom spec sportsbikes is to deliver the performace the market dictates, but do so within the latest emission standards.
Similar problems in the car market.
Porsche haven't sold a single new car for 3 months due to emission changes. They are now fitting particular filters to their petrol engines.
Its also rumoured that for the first time ever the GT3 might be turbocharged as the rest of the 911 range is. Porsche purests will want and expect a high revving naturally aspirated engine as previous GT3 lineage has been, but the word is Porsche are struggling to meet the emission standard with a high revving naturally aspirated engine. This would seem to me a very similar problem shared by sportsbike engineers. The easiest way to increase a bikes performance with out high revs is to increase capacity.

You'd have thought Porsche might have gone down the weight-stripping path like they have in the past, but I'm guessing most Porsche buyers like their creature-comforts as much as anyone else.....and you can't really blame them - few of those cars will ever be driven to their full potential.

I don't believe car manufacturers want to spend R&D money on petrol engines. Every pound or euro is currently spent on electric technology only.

Well they 've spent a fortune on Particular filters for petrol cars and not sold one single brand new car for at least 3 months, which must hurt the bottom line massively. Every OPC main dealer is full of second hand stock wuth not a single new car in Europe.

Due to emissions requirements, engines these days are hugely over-engineered. One example is the Audi RS3 (2.5T 5 Cylinder). With an intercooler and remap it achieves 500bhp and still achieves the required emissions. The reason Audi don't sell it with 500bhp is purely marketing and the fact the mass market don't care for it.

The new regulations mean that every spec of every vehicle has to have its own CO2 rating. I suusoect Porsche might have been fiddling the tests in the past.

Who hasn't fiddled their tests?! BMW are the biggest bu!!sh!tters when it comes to that, how they haven't been found out for it is ridiculous.
They're the company car favourite because they have the most power for the least tax (i.e. emissions) so god knows how they get away with it

Th story i was told by an industry insider is that all the German manufacturers were asked by the USA testers to provide 50 vehicles from stock so that they could test them to see if they met the standard.
BMW and Mercedes said they didn't have 50 vehicles in stock.
VW/Audi did and gave them the 50 cars and were the ones who took the full force as a result.

I'd be surprised if Mercedes were as bad as the others to be honest purely because their engines weren't as efficient or powerful but were also higher tax bands (thinking of the 2.2CDI used in the C200, C220 and C250)
Nice move on their part though (i.e. don't have 50 cars in stock) but also, Merc has replaced the 2.2 with a 2.0 diesel so I imagine they knew their engine wasn't great but also knew they had a new one in the pipeline so possibly brought production forward

VW diesels failed on NOx emissions, a particularly nasty by product of burning diesel. I think when they did subsequent tests on all vehicles none of them attained the claimed levels.
NOx causes respiratory problems which is why we are seeing the death of the Diesel engine. NOx levels are dangerously high in a lot of cities.
