Re: The new improved fitness thread
I'm sorry but I did chuckle imagining that!! How on earth did you get cramp because of a warm up?!

Re: The new improved fitness thread
By warm up I don't mean gentle stretching. He does a 15 minute circuit training session before he gets into the boxing, which is a killer. I did that then walked over to the squat rack thinking I could go straight into squats.

Re: The new improved fitness thread
Ah.. so you're daft is what you're saying? haha..
Don't you start low weight and work your way up or do you just go straight into a working set?
E.g. I start with 60kg then go up: 60, 100, 120, 130, 140, etc...

Re: The new improved fitness thread
Doh! Did it feel a bit touchy before starting the squat? Maybe a bit of foam roller next time?

The hamstrings were a bit tight before I started.

Never too old or too experienced to learn.
Have you started to pick up the gym a bit more again or is this just because of the hand?

Re: The new improved fitness thread
The hand is preventing me from doing boxercise and taekwondo sparring so I'm back in the gym again. I still have to be careful though as the hand hurts if there's pressure in certain directions. That's why I thought it would be sensible to do legs.

Re: The new improved fitness thread
Yeah that makes sense. Any wrist or hand pain and I found upright rows were the absolute worst.
A 'push' workout might be alright for you though - just don't overgrip the weight

Re: The new improved fitness thread
I'm back in the gym on Thursday so I'll try a back session and see how I get on. I think dumbbells are out for now but cables and barbell seemed to be ok yesterday. I'll probably avoid free weights for a bit until the hand has recovered.

DOMs have really kicked in today, especially on the inner thighs. I'm walking like John Wayne.

Re: The new improved fitness thread
Back to training yesterday. Club session, 25 mins out, faster back.
Can still feel the tiredness in my legs, but was still able to hold just over 8 min/miles for 2 or so miles. Back to cycling into work this morning as well.

Re: The new improved fitness thread
I trained last night but was feeling very low so did 1 less triple set (only 2 exercises per muscle group) but focussed on slowing everything down and being VERY strict on form - I ache bad today.
I was training at weights Approx. 50% of my 3RM for 3 sets of 20 - 15 - 10.
I then did 1 exercise each for biceps and triceps; again with strict form and very slowly to maximise contractions

Re: The new improved fitness thread
It has it's benefits, however, you should still do some heavy weight / low reps to maintain outright strength.
I'll do 2x light and 1x heavy sessions every week typically - certainly it's working for me

I'm doing my normal weights when I train and I do a mix of stuff with my PT. He loves his pyramid sets as well.

Pyramid sets for everything? I do those for heavy squats, leg press and bench

Re: The new improved fitness thread
No. When I mention a type of exercise, don't presume I mean he does that for all exercises. We do a range of stuff depending on what I want to train and what I've already done that week.
So far I've only done pyramids for leg press and overhead press. For chest bench he likes the rest on chest then 3 seconds up, 3 seconds down then rest again. Last time we did that I did a set of those after 2 normal sets then followed up with a rep to fail.
Don't forget, I'm not looking to gain in size or do much in terms of increasing my strength. At 46 I don't care about that stuff which is why I've stayed fairly constant on my squat and deadlift weights. It's just about making sure I don't look like a middle aged bloke who spends his days sat behind a desk stuffing his face.
