This was one of the first work camps set up. It was a munitions factory during World War 1. In the early 30s Hitler started to open up work and education camps to deal with his opponents.

Although not a death camp, of the 200,000 people who entered, 40,000 never left. The camp had prisoners from all over Europe, including over 100 from the UK. 4 female servicemen were captured assisting the local resistance. They were executed at the prison.

A gas chamber was set up (disguised as a shower room) but it was not used as intended for the mass execution of inmates. They did try it out a few times. Many inmates were hanged in front of the cremation ovens.

The camp was set up for 6,000 prisoners but there were about 30,000 at the time the US troops liberated it. Over a third were close to death. The camp had piles of bodies stacked up waiting to be burned. The US troops forced the locals to clear the camp.

Been watching WW2 in colour, great series, the last one I watched was when they started to come across all the camps for the first time... I find it so hard to understand how one human can do this to another.

Frankie, when you've finished that series try Einsatzgruppen. Currently on Netflix and worth a watch if you want to get an idea of how and why it happened.

I started to watch that. I decided I needed to be in the house alone. It's pretty grim viewing.

Should be taught in schools, it’s a harsh lesson that everyone should learn. Especially that section of society that uses words like snowflake.

Doesn't the origins of the use of word 'snowflake' as a derogatory term date back to white supremacists and slavery in the 1800s?

In that sense/context, a "snowflake" was a black person who acted 'too white', 'too uppity', etc.

I think it was more that a snowflake was someone who thought 'white' was perfect and unique and black was bad.

Absolutely harrowing stuff there Kwacky. However i bet it was interesting and you gained more knowledge of it all.

Ill always rememeber visiting a museum where they had a fraction of wooden shoes for the prisoners in one glass cabinet stacked up high stating that regardless of who went in, these shoes were basically reused from prison to prison, when they were killed these shoes what straight to the next prisoner who had been shipped in. They would get splinters and made to work in them until they died.
