Managed to get the kids minded for 3 night in late October and me and the missus have always fancied going to Venice.

Has anyone been ? Got any advice or recommendations ?

As always appreciate any advice or recommendations. Cheers.

Come to Birmingham, we've got more canals, it's cheaper and the locals are slightly easier to understand.

You'll be surprised about the food in Brum, it's very high standard here. We've got loads of Michelin Star restaurants and even our street food wins awards.

Did you see the burger photo I posted on Friday?

Lovely place we went when we did a cruise. Would like to revisit at some point. Unless you like raping don't purchase food / drinks anywhere near St marks square its a rip off. We walked around and found a cafe shop in a back street ally it was reasonably priced and was very nice. Think 3 days will be more than enough to soak it all up and see the sights.

Venice is an amazing spot. In autumn it should be relatively quiet too. I couldn't help think the canals stunk of poo though.

Mind you. That's because they are full of poo. Pass on the gondola rides .

Venice is very pretty but my abiding memories are it stinks and there are too many tourists there.

I think you need to go at the right time of year to avoid both, dunno when that is though.

Apparently October is the best time to go as weather still pleasant but most of the tourists have gone home and the September film festival has finished. Spot of luck really as October is the only time we can get the kids minded so must have meant to be.

Echo the remarks re StMarks square vicinity, MiL & FiL were there on a cruise a year and needed a sit down and a drink, so they sat near a band that were playing - and charged £9 for one lemonade and seat rental for the music. Thieving sods.

Had similar expensive drink experiences when we went to Florence but thanks for the heads up.

I'll save a couple of quid and buy my cornetto in a corner shop for the obligatory gondola ride ;)

Didn't realise how old cornetto were, that's quite a shocker I thought they were relatively new!! Great add, I wouldn't be surprised if nowadays they would ban that for thieving!!
