I want to get myself a new camera but I'm about as naive about them as I am to computers
I want one that'll self focus and has this 'put ya finger on the button and it'll take about 20 shots in a second' feature
Not too bothered about special features or changes in images etc
Any good deals and or recommendations ??

I'm the same as you tbh Spudda.
Its a couple of years ago now but we got a canon powershot sx220 and we are very happy with it.
Has a kids and pets setting which is great for taking shots of kids as a really fast focus so you don't miss that split second when there actually looking at you.
Also has a setting that detects when you smile and automatically takes a photo. Sounds a gimmick but actually works and is very useful again with the kids.
Also has a timer so great for getting the whole family in the photo.
Really long range zoom lens and HD video 1080p. Probably best feature apart from great pictures is very simple to use and smaller enough to tale anywhere. We did consider a digital SLR which will obviously be a technically superior product but in our opinion their too bulky and if you subsequently never take it with you due to it's bulk its effectively useless. Horses for course obviously so depends what you want it for.
Hope the comments are useful mate.

I've got a similar one - Canon Powershot 240 sx240. Great features, simple to use, high res and good distance on the lens.

Much depends on what you want to use the camera for, Spudda.
Just general day to day stuff or photos of bikes on track?

I have a Canon t3i I bought about 3 years ago, found a package on Amazon that came with 2 lenses, 3 batteries, 2 tripods, macro set, filters, 2 SD cards and a nice padded backpack for about $1,000 US. I went for a SLR and despite the bulk, we carry it everywhere and I've had quite a bit of enjoyment playing around with it.
