I've got a deadleg from Taekwondo. I took a real battering during sparring on Monday. The guy I was fighting forgot it was light sparring, that one of the tenets of TKD is "self control" and that all kicks are above waist height. I got kicked in the nuts, took two kicks to the leg and broke another toe as he kicked my foot. I don't mind people having a go but you learn nothing when you fight like that.
So yesterday at the gym I skipped leg day - no squats for me.

I wouldn't be able to control myself if someone did this to me.. I'd have taken my gloves off and punched him in the throat

The temptation to upper cut as I stood up from the kick to the leg was right up there.
I'm doing a lot of stretching exercises so I can kick higher. Most blokes my age struggle to get decent height on their kicks. I'm up to my shoulder height with front and outside kicks. As soon as I can kick him in the face I will

5x5 and I'm still adding weight. 75kg on the squat. I know it's not a lot but I've only been doing it for a few weeks.
Deadlifts at 110kg still seem easy so that's promising. Shoulder is burning at 40kg overhead press.

Good going!
Word of advice as someone who dislocated their shoulder twice doing shoulder press with dumbells, don't go too heavy. I was doing 24kg dumbells when my hand ended up behind my back, popping my shoulder out. I managed to lean forward which brought my arm and the weight forward which clicked it back in again but it's a weak point now.
With shoulder I go for higher reps and lower weight now, Not been an issue for a while

Cheers for the advice. I'll listen to what my shoulder is telling me.

Ending up sparring with a 2nd Dan blackbelt last night. She's about 18. The speed she has is incredible. I was sweating like Jimmy Savile at a Childrens Hospital. But it goes to show the control they have, not a single bruise or mark on me.

I'm used to receiving scratches from my 20 year old girlfriend after 'sparring'
I'm starting to get abs !! My reduced food intake and increased cardio and heavier weights is having an effect.
I managed 6sets x 8reps close grip incline chest press with 70kg last night followed by various cable exercises, overhead dumbell pulls, weighted wide grip dips and then I did an excessive number of drop sets on my triceps. Straight after that I went for a swim for little over half an hour managing about 30 lengths.

I'll need more than martial arts to save me if my wife thought I was doing that kind of sparring with an 18 year old

Got out for a road run, so much better than the treadmill. Felt ok but took it easy on the ankle. I knew it was a warm day but when I got back I almost died and sat in the shower trying to cool down. Once is recovered I checked the weather app...
34 deg C

Had my first squat fail tonight. Set 4, 5th rep. Inside right leg/hip went. Managed to stand through it and rack it. 80kg.

Turns out it's hip weakness, so I'm going to be doing some exercises to tackle that.

Look up Pilates Hip Exercises... that stuff kills but works really well! Trouble with hips is they don't get strong quick, it's a very long process and if you do it wrong you do more harm than good

Cheers Cav. I've picked up on it early enough so I'm hoping I can avoid any long term problems.
