Re: Coronavirus - hype or pandemlc?
It puts into perspective all the material stuff doesn't it. As much as I don't like the fudging of the numbers the fact remains, this virus is taking lives.
RIP. My thoughts are with all the families of those with whom they can't morn.

My mate and his dad both had it. My mate got it through work. His dad got it when he went into hospital for a stroke. His dad didn't survive. They're Irish/Italian and catholic. It's got to be a cremation and there's no wake. My mate is absolutely devastated.

Re: Coronavirus - hype or pandemlc?
It's horrendous. I'm extremely fortunate that I haven't lost a grandparent (or anyone for that matter) in my family and I cannot imagine losing them let alone not being able to see them or be with my affected family.
My Dad's side is Irish/Catholic too and they're extremely fearful of the exact situation you just described.

Re: Coronavirus - hype or pandemlc?
Thats sad Kwacky - i'm sure there are plenty of stories like that which is adding to the distress for many
Nothing I can say will improve that shitty situation.
I'm terrified my parents are going to get it. Mid 70's and both very fit, but they go out every day and go shopping occasionally too

Re: Coronavirus - hype or pandemlc?
Cookie, some advice picked up from my MiL who is a Hospice at Home carer for a well known Charity is to have a 'clean pocket' and 'dirty pocket'.
Essentially, leave non-essentials in the car (phone, wallet), have a 'clean pocket' with alcohol gel and cleaned car keys, and a 'dirty pocket' with payment card and other necessities.
Gel hands before touching keys or car.
Also, load shopping directly into bags in the trolley/basket and have spare bags to 'decant' into at the checkout. Never let the items touch the packing area basically. As much as possible try to use just 1 hand for picking things up.
I hope that helps. We all just have to do the best we can and assume that every surface has the virus.

Re: Coronavirus - hype or pandemlc?
Looks like the true picture is far worse than the Govt want us to believe.
3475 coronavirus-linked deaths in one week is not good.
https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/health-52278825" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
MiL had a letter from the NHS last week to say her care and treatment would continue until July. Whilst there is no mention of it being stopped after that, its a strange letter to send out and either poorly worded or suggesting they will no longer treat her after that.

Re: Coronavirus - hype or pandemlc?
I believe the true picture is better than they are portraying as the number of flu or pneumonia related deaths have plummeted thus indicating that deaths which would normally have happened are being attributed to coronavirus. In actuality, they died of other causes but have the virus in their system at the time of death.
We also have no way of knowing the true mortality rate as tests haven't been conducted for weeks.

Re: Coronavirus - hype or pandemlc?
To be fair, everyone checks the date on milk when they buy it, and the fresh ones are always in the back. Innocent habits like that are fairly difficult to break for most.duke63 wrote:Yesterday, I watched **** in our local CoOp picking up bottles of milk in the fridge in the shop.....and then putting them back down and choosing another.

Re: Coronavirus - hype or pandemlc?
The figure in that article say the number of deaths are up even taking into account the coronavirus element. Over 16,000 deaths in one week when the average for that time of year is closer to 10,000.Cav wrote:I believe the true picture is better than they are portraying as the number of flu or pneumonia related deaths have plummeted thus indicating that deaths which would normally have happened are being attributed to coronavirus. Re: Coronavirus - hype or pandemlc?
You can compare the annual deaths from last year on a week by week basis. In England and Wales for last week, based on hospital deaths alone, we're up by over 6,000.
But what you need to remember is that other causes of death will be decreased due to the shutdown. Car accidents, DIY, motorcycle, sports, operations for instance all cause deaths. They reckon road traffic is down to about 15% of usual. So even if someone crashes, there's a much reduced chance of anyone else being involved (be that other vehicles or occupants of vehicles).
I know there's a lot of arguments about deaths being cited as "covid related" but a lot of people dying outside of hospital aren't being tested, so the cause of death isn't recorded as covid related.

Re: Coronavirus - hype or pandemlc?
It would appear they are only registering deaths relating to coronavirus. I presume that means later in the year they will register all other causes of death but are just recording them at the current time.
FYI, there is a discrepancy of 2000 deaths in their records. less than 4000 coronavirus deaths are recorded and they don't mention any other types of death besides "underlying respiratory disease (which has risen by 600 this week).
One stat which is sad to see is that as many <1 year olds have died as 30-34 year olds.

Re: Coronavirus - hype or pandemlc?
Having hit "submit" i realise the 2000 discrepancy is from underlying respiratory disease therefore the 6000 figure being thrown around is 50% larger than it should be!

Re: Coronavirus - hype or pandemlc?
Cav, are you arguing that covid 19 isn't as serious as we're being told and that it's being over played?
