To be completely honest, i know less about the Australian politic situation than i do about the UK, because I'm on TS so much I'm well schooled with varied viewpoints on your political situationBlade wrote:Couple of genuine questions for kiwi as I genuinely don't know the answers, but I don't think Australia is much different to the UK at the moment.

Australia is part of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC), the Comprehensive and Progressive Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP) and the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP).Blade wrote:Is Austriala part of any union with neighbouring countries or have they made independent free trade agreements with a number of other independent countries?
we have an Australia-New Zealand Closer Economic Relations Trade Agreement
We have an Australia-European Union Free Trade Agreement.
there is a number of other trade/economic agreements, but these or the ones that i knew to look for....
That's very subjective. They have always struggled with illegal immigration (usually by boat via Indonesia) and detention situations, but welcome legal immigration in large numbers to sustain growth. I don't believe in growth as the ideal economical policy so I don't entirely agree with the rate of immigration for that purpose. I do believe in taking genuine immigrants on humanitarian grounds, but that is not a simple situation to manage as well all know.Blade wrote:Has Australia got reasonable controls on immigration?
Dunno. In reality I know without Private medical insurance, there are long waiting lists.Blade wrote:Was The Australian Medicare system ranked lower than the NHS in a recent survey?
Real world example, Jess saw a specialist last week. With her being on my company provided medical insurance she is having surgery next week. If she had have gone public it was a minimum 3 month wait, even though she is dealing with a significant amount of pain and her situation has previously had her need emergency surgery.

Grass always seems better on the other side, but reality will tell you that isn't always the case.
Duke is right, it's scorching hot here at times, yet I found the winters still to cold. I like to be hot. I'm happy at mid 30's, anything under 20 and I have heating going. 38+ is a bit challenging, 43+ is completely fecked and I try not to work outside, though have still purposely gone on the bike. But it's a big country with varying climates and I definitely don't live in the most ideal area for that. And yes at the moment the fires are a real bummer.
Nutz, the totty is pretty good at times

Kwacky, you can do corners better than me I reckon, so you qualify. A lot of guys I've tried to ride with in Aussie don't agree speed limits are a guide or that the last 2 inch edge of your tyre are to be used.

Re: General Election 2019?
Cheers Kiwi some great info thanks for the post.
As I suspected it doesnt sound too different to the UK, which it seems I'm in a minority on here, but I actually still think is a great place to live.
Strange how people see Australia as a desirable place to live but feel the UK isnt when they are so similar.

TBH I was already aware of the statistics, which is why my previous post included the observation:Kwacky wrote:The result under PR

On a connected subject, I wonder what the percentage is of people who intentionally "spoilt their ballots" this time.? -I know of a few, which suggests there may have been a fair few.?

I merely posted the figures for information. It wasn't a slight at you. I merely thought people might like to see the figures.

Australia doesn't appeal to me. I want somewhere with a more laid back style of life these days.Blade wrote:Cheers Kiwi some great info thanks for the post.

I would also like enough land to grow many of my own vegetables and some fruit. I suspect the mass produced food sold here and elsewhere has a significant impact on the rising cancer rates .

Re: General Election 2019?
On the subject of healthcare, I don't believe the NHS will be able to give a decent level of healthcare in 10 years time.
I got a quote for the wife and myself for five years full healthcare in France covering a period of five years. The quote was £15k which in the scheme of things I didn't think was too bad considering our age and it gave full cover for the Big C.
Private healthcare in the UK is very limited in its scope and cost unless you are included in a Company scheme as part of your job. Just this week a client had his company renewal for himself and his wife and the quote was double last year because he had a minor knee op a few months ago. He cant go elsewhere as any new company will not cover his knee.

Health care in France is excellent and well run. We've been impressed.duke63 wrote:On the subject of healthcare, I don't believe the NHS will be able to give a decent level of healthcare in 10 years time.

Do you pay private Cookie? Or are you entitled to state run healthcare? Not sure what the options are in France tbh.

Out of interest does the quote increase dramatically as you age???
Will the health care cover repeat treatment for chronic conditions?

Re: General Election 2019?
Both. Because I can support myself and pay tax the state pay most of it and then there is topup insurance which you can choose the level so you can have your own room etc etc.Blade wrote:Do you pay private Cookie? There are also no waiting lists.

No, as the state stop profiteering of insurance companies.Blade wrote:duke63 wrote:On the subject of healthcare, I don't believe the NHS will be able to give a decent level of healthcare in 10 years time.

No waiting lists is very good. Is that the same if you dont have top up insurance?C00kiemonster wrote:Both. Exactly the same. The only thing you do pay then is about 15 - 20% of the treatment.Blade wrote:No waiting lists is very good. Re: General Election 2019?
Sounds good apart from the 20% cost of treatment. I imagine that could be tens of thousands potentially
Do you get any rebate or provision after paying into UK healthcare for years, but no longer using it?
