The political problems Northern Ireland has faced have been drawn pretty squarely down left-wing/right-wing Catholic/Protestant lines, have they not??

That's not a war, but I'll indulge.
The UK is predominantly Anglican. Ireland is Catholic.
Britain took the north of Ireland and claimed it. The population at the time wasn't really given much choice so they ditched the Catholic church for the Anglican one.
North v South is all about land. Retaining it or getting it back. Religion is a puppet in what goes on in Irish politics but its not the puppet-master.

Oh I agree....religion hasn't been the deciding factor in N.I., but it's certainly played a huge role in determining what side of the fence everyone sits.
Religion is going to have a strong influence on morals...and morals play a huge role in politics.

Thank you
Yet over the last few weeks I have seen countless posts on Facebook from people showing the graves of our fallen or photos of poppies and remembrance pictures with words to the effect of "we've paid out debt to the EU - Pay no divorce bill".
So sadly it seems far too many in this country want to use the wars and the deaths of millions of people to argue for the UK to leave the EU without meeting its current and future financial liabilities.
We need to remember the reasons for the wars and try to make sure that we don't repeat them. It is perfectly acceptable for people to contend that leaving a longstanding peaceful union of neighbouring countries is not going to ensure lasting peace.

I finally got to watch all of this.
Films like this need to be shown on a regular basis so we understand that war isn't glorious or glamorous.
We can't be allowed to forget.

Very late here haven't been on for quite some time
Glad you got to watch it Kwacky. I agree we can't be allowed to forget. It really stirred emotions up when we were all sitting in the cinema together

I didn't post again in this thread Rossgo, out of respect for your request that the subject was not distracted further .
I sincerely apologise that you felt my observations were inappropriate mate, but I can assure you that I believe I have valid grounds to feel more empathy for their sacrifice than most.
Anyway, FYI I've posted in our most hated thread if you'd like a better explanation.:

Sorry once again mate, & I agree it made excellent & very moving viewing.
