Topped up my oil as I found it has dropped.

I have a question though. I rode around 2k on the garages oil after a service and the oil didn't drop at all, then did my own oil change (again 2k miles) and changed to halfords own oil but it has dropped. Is it because it's cheaper oil? Or have I got a problem?

It will be getting a major service next month with all the trimmings I think to keep it working nicely. So will say about it then but any advice is welcomed

When did it drop from? You'll find a drop in the level after you've done an oil change and then used the bike.

A one off drop isn't an issue. If it's dropping all the time then you need to do some investigating. First place to look is around the oil filter, then check the sump nut.

No experience of Halfords oil but I assume it was bike specific and met the specified standard stipulated in your handbook. If that's true and I'm sure it is then the cost of the oil will have had no effect on its consumption rate.

If you drained the oil and filter during your own oil change service then when you fill up the level with fresh oil the level will initially read correctly. However that level will then drop when the engine is first run and the filter is filled with oil again.

Best thing to do is run the engine up to temperature. Shut it off and wait a few minutes for the oil to drain back to sump. This is the actual true oil level. If it's low top it up. Now use the bike and check regualarly for any change in level. If there is a change in level your either burning oil or leaking oil. Burning oil should be seen at the exhaust as a black smoke and leaking oil should be seen as a slight weep on one of the fittings or joints.

Hope that helps but let me know if you want any more help mate.

It seemed to of dropped after 1 ride a few weeks ago. It was strange as I keep an eye on it before or after a ride. Didn't notice anything strange about it the ride before. I will check the sump bolt out and also the filter. Didn't see any major issues with it yesterday mind. But it was peeing it down so could of masked anything.

There could have been an air bubble in the filter. It's not uncommon.

I think it was the filter replenishing after the oil change as suggested in my original post. Especially if happened a few weeks ago.

If it's low top it up and monitor consumption.

Honda quoted 1 litre every 1000 miles as the upper acceptable limit when they had problems with the 08 Blade but I wouldn't expect anywhere near that.

Did you change the viscosity grade or change from semi synth to full synth?

Blade sorry mate didnt see your orginal post think you must of posted while I was still typing mine and on tapatalk isn't a live feed and didn't refresh the page!

Yes it was bike specific. I think I've heard people use car oil before but no way would I ever use that, look after your bike and it will look after you and same as kit haha!!

No when I did the oil change it was purely an oil change. The service had an oil and filter change. When I did the change I just drained the old oil, and filled with new oil. I know this isn't the best ideas but the old oil Stoll looked pretty new.

Have done around 1.3k on this new oil and realised it has gone down, whereas I did 2k on the other oil and it didn't budge!! I may just be over thinking things I'm unsure!!

Thanks for the info. I will check it over again when it's fully dry and run her and see what's going on. Haven't noticed any black smoke mind. That would ring massive alarm bells in my head and wouldn't be ran to be honest!

Monty, not that I was aware. Literally picked up the best halfords had for an affordable price Just to change over oil before next service. Don't fancy running same oil for 4k miles between services

as long as its not blowing a lot of blue smoke out of the exhaust i wouldnt worry about it,as others have said temperatures effect oil level readings

It's just me being anal rossgo, but if I'm going to the expensive and effort to change oil I do a filter as well. Doesn't add much to the overall time or expensive and its piece of mind. I would never skip a filter change if it was due either.

Thanks perkles. I haven't noticed any difference in the steams colour. Maybe I'm just over thinking things!!

Kiwi. Yes do agree with this as well. When I did it just wanted a quick job like I saw when I drained the oil it was still like new! The old owner kept good care of her before me, and I wouldn't miss anything on the service intervals. Again it comes down to the old saying of look after it and it will look after you! I certainly don't want to screw it up haha!

That was the upper limit on the 08 Blade that had a known issue with oil consumption. Most engines won't use any oil or next to nothing.
