I'd love to do a career change, but sadly I can't afford to. I'm committed to the house and mortgage now and am starting to work towards and exit plan to retirement now.

I just have to remember that life maybe stressful now, but if I focus on keeping my current level of earning I could get the mortgage paid off in 10 years. This would allow me to wind down, stash some cash for retirement, and feck off out of this country to somewhere warmer.

In two months i have done just under 300 miles in the car. Finally got round to filling up and it cost me £35 as fuel is now 99.9p per litre. Win win.

I really enjoyed it as well. Admittedly I only did 2 weeks and it didn’t leave me time for much else which was a bit frustrating, but the actual helping with school work was very rewarding.

I actually wanted to be a teacher when I left school but after doing some volunteer teachers aid with 5-6 yr olds it put the 18 yr old me off. I’ve been a technical instructor is 2 previous jobs and do work place competency assessments now. Also did a few years divemastering on dive courses as a part time job.

So I guess it might explain why I enjoy the homeschooling a bit.

The kids learn about the world.
The parents learn about patience.

Not as experienced as you Kiwi but I'm an NVQ assessor at work, so I did a basic teaching qualification which taught me quite a bit how to teach fun enough and tbh although I'm no expert, its been very beneficial in my home life as well as work.
