yes sorry what I meant was dont get hung up on branding and having to buy the latest trek or speciaiized or cannondale etc

That's why the Vitus stands out. A friend has one and says its great, plus they're good value compared with the more mainstream brands.

IIRC, the bikes you and your Dad make are way beyond my budget, is that right?

you want to spend about a grand ? I would look 2nd hand like the others siad but if you are commuting by road you will wish you would have bought a proper road bike.Hybrids are great for canal toe paths and the parks etc but hard work on the road

You will get a really nice bike for a grand,sizing and fit that is the most important thing
Your money should go on the best frame and wheels you can get for your money ,then saddle and handlebars and stem,.Equipment can be upgraded if you get into it ,the frame is the heart of the bike
I would say most Moto GP,WSB and BSB racers use cycling for training now ,Cal Crutclow is fecking good on a pushbike and Troy Bayliss could probably be top 10 in amateur local bike races
My Colnago is worth more than my S1K depending what wheels are in it ,its a bit like Ducati special, timeless and fecking awesome

Genuine question. What's the benefit of the thick rims? Do they not cause problems in side winds?

thats a good question

They are extremely rigid and responsive ,light and aerodynamic ,horrible in a cross wind and not great for climbing
The ones in the photo are 60mm that I use for general riding but the ultimate wheel size depending on terrain and use is a 38mm carbon fibre rim ,it gives the best balance of all of the above
I have a set of Corima tubular 38mms that cost around 2k and are incredible to ride on but a bit precious,if you are after performance from equipment the lowest hanging fruit is rotating mass,then overall weight
