Re: Coronavirus - hype or pandemlc?
Question is are we going to face this level of disruption to people, buiness and travel every 5 to 10 years as a new virus comes on to the scene?

I don't know....I've never seen anything like this before. The only thing comparable would maybe be the grocery-store strike about 15 years ago, where people were panic-buying a lot of stuff, boycotting certain stores, etc.
But that's only one aspect of where we're at right now.

Re: Coronavirus - hype or pandemlc?
Its impossible to predict even if we were experts but i suspect, once this is all over, there will be a lot of questions asked about how health services use their funds in future and if keeping elderly people alive with drugs is either cost effective and/or a sensible thing to do, in light of this coronavirus.
The health of younger people is also likely to come under some scrutiny when many eat too much and exercise little.

Imagine trying to get private health cover in your 90's with underlying health problems after a life time of crap diet, excessive alcohol and smoking 20 a day and being obese due to zero excerise, you would most likely be declined cover.
Yet that very scenario is what is expected of the NHS on a large scale. Say it like that and you can see why the NHS is in a mess, its asked to do the almost impossible on a daily basis.

It may have a dramatic effect on Globalisation.Blade wrote:Question is are we going to face this level of disruption to people, buiness and travel every 5 to 10 years as a new virus comes on to the scene?
Looking at how the start of even this "mild virus" has already effected manufacturing, transport & oil prices etc... the signals are very disturbing.
The Great Depression was instigated by lesser causes iirc.

Obesity is the biggest problem for the NHS. That's more varied by the elderly

Re: Coronavirus - hype or pandemlc?
As per Blades point about the NHS's uphill battle with the elderly, private medical insurance would presumably baulk at having to offer cover to those many youngsters we all see waddling around between fast food outlets.?Kwacky wrote:Obesity is the biggest problem for the NHS. Two wrongs & all that.??

A big proportion of NHS money is spent on keeping elderly people alive. It's the biggest cost to them above cancer and diabetes.

Re: Coronavirus - hype or pandemlc?
Private medical insurance in the UK would need a massive overhaul to make it a viable alternative for the vast majority. Once you make a claim, the increase in cost on renewal is disproportionate.

Re: Coronavirus - hype or pandemlc?
Sure, I mean, as people get above a certain age their overall health tends to deteriorate & the costs incurred are going to increase.duke63 wrote:A big proportion of NHS money is spent on keeping elderly people alive. It's the biggest cost to them above cancer and diabetes.
If we as a society can't take care of our elderly then aren't we sort of missing the whole point??

Obviously obesity is the major player in Diabetes, but it's actually now a leading cause in Cancer.!

With regards to the Covid-19, do you not think that the USA model of healthcare may be found lacking.?D41 wrote:. overall health tends to deteriorate & the costs incurred are going to increase..
On the plus side, the outcome for Trumps re-election campaign is likely to be seriously effected imho.

Re: Coronavirus - hype or pandemlc?
All my experiences healthcare-wise have been positive over the last 30 years or so (Jeez, has it been that long??).
I think the stats on healthcare here tend to get skewed downwards because we have a fairly decent amount of illegal immigrants living here....they fall between the cracks in that regard. There's help available, but it's not the best.
As far as Covid-19 goes, I think everyone's been caught napping by just how big the hype surrounding this is.
And you take it in context....around 100 people die every day here in fatal RTA's, and they're mostly only ever reported on both individually, and locally.

No change to the amount of traffic on the roads
Morrisons car park was pretty much full at 7.30 this morning.
And their petrol station was very busy

Re: Coronavirus - hype or pandemlc?
I’ve had the official word. Due to the fact I work outside of Australian waters I have to self isolate for 14 days every time I come home from work till this shite fight is over
For my state failure to comply with self isolation requirements is punishable with a fine of $12,000 and or 6 months prison time.
