Here is an interesting angle regarding Europe and the wider situation.

Re: Post referendum
That's a good read. It goes someway to explain Germany's quick offer to provide dial citizenship to Brits working there.
It's a good job we never joined the Euro, that would have cause a real mess. That said, the fact we didn't probably allowed the decision to be made. It also proves that we were never really committed to the Euro idea.

Re: Post referendum
It's not the Germans that we need be concerned about IMHO. Fer example the PRC are far more proactive & focused in their procurement of foreign infrastructure.

Re: Post referendum
I think you are right that the PRC is a big danger to the future with their 'investment' in the west. We will be totally reliable on them for money before we can stop it.
However i do think Germany has had too much influence on the EU. I read the other day a theory that one way of saving the Euro would be to keep it for all EU nations except Germany.

Now that's an intriguing thought.duke63 wrote:However i do think Germany has had too much influence on the EU. I read the other day a theory that one way of saving the Euro would be to keep it for all EU nations except Germany.
It'll never happen though.
On balance (don't hate me Monty) I think life under German rule may be (less unbearable ?) than under the Chinese regime.???

Re: Post referendum
In fairness I've dealt with Germans and Chinese, and the Germans play it straight - they'll try and screw you but be upfront about it, on the other hand the Chinese always seem to have a completely different agenda to the one they've given you.
I'd far rather work with Germans any day.

Re: Post referendum
A few years ago (15) I spent a week with Deutz's Dr of engine management systems, both in our test cells and in the hotel at night. He brought a translator with him which is fine, not unusual, and we spoke both professionally and personally over dinner through the translator. We found after he spoke perfect English, but he kept up the pretence for the whole week.

There are arseholes of all nationalities. It's a human trait rather than a national trait.

Re: Post referendum
Very true Duke, but I've spent the the last 20 years either working for or negotiating with Spanish, French, Itailian, British and German companies. The Germans are in my experience by far the most difficult to deal with and least trustworthy.
To be fair though they do have beer vending machines on the shop floor, which is great.

Weird how we've had opposite experiences Monty, I've worked in most of the European countries over the last 25yrs, and as I pointed out above found the Germans pretty good - even if they are psychologically incapable of admitting they've made a mistake.Monty wrote:Very true Duke, but I've spent the the last 20 years either working for or negotiating with Spanish, French, Itailian, British and German companies. The beer has been removed from the shop floor in our factory near Nürnberg, it's only available in the canteen now, and horror of horrors, there's an alcohol free beer in there too. Lots of muttering about that in the ranks apparently.

I think it depends at what level (their level) you work at. Seems the higher you go up the more **** you get. Very hierarchical.Deegee wrote:Weird how we've had opposite experiences Monty, I've worked in most of the European countries over the last 25yrs, and as I pointed out above found the Germans pretty good - even if they are psychologically incapable of admitting they've made a mistake.Monty wrote:Very true Duke, but I've spent the the last 20 years either working for or negotiating with Spanish, French, Itailian, British and German companies. The French Engineers are great to work with really enjoyed my visits to John Deere. Although you do have to factor an extra half an hour into the day just for shaking hands!
