Re: Coronavirus - hype or pandemlc?
The problem is a large proportion of the general public have no risk or hazard perception. To them all risk have the same likelihood regardless of mitgations and the most extreme outcome is the only possible outcome.
The media has headlined the Coronavirus risk and some people are now target fixated on that one risk.
Ask yourself how many people worry as much about some of the everyday hazards on the list below as they do about the headline Coronavirus risk???

Re: Coronavirus - hype or pandemlc?
The above data is from the National Safety Council.
It puts the risk of death by Motor Vehicle Accident as 1 in 114.
Imagine if we headlined this risk. People would be doing extra training, taking driving seriously, not using phones or other distractions.....
We could social distance cars to stop tail gating and aggressive driving. Imagine how easy we could imorove road safety if everyone evaluated the risk accurately and acted accordingly.

I don't know. I mean, it's not exactly a bona-fide "condition", is it?Perkles wrote:Have you never had man flu ?D41 wrote:Why is that scary? Because this is not like any virus we have encountered for 100 years. Its beaten medical science and knowledge to date.D41 wrote:Why is that scary? Who is to say those who get re-infected by it, don't get much worse symptoms second time around?
I was chatting with a mate about it last week and as he pointed out, we now have medicines and knowledge than can keep people alive who would, maybe 50 years ago or even 20 years ago, have died.
Perhaps the gene pool that the human race is now producing is not sufficiently immune to new bacteria and viruses as we have weakened our immunity systems too much. I don't think there is much doubt that over use of anti biotics and other drugs is to blame here on some level.

Re: Coronavirus - hype or pandemlc?
I wouldnt say its beaten medical science yet, either.
Its a new virus and we are working on cures and solutions. We are not beaten yet.
As regards unlike any other virus. Show me the cure or immunisation for the common cold?
Its a genuine and serious threat that I dont underestimate, but the likelihood of infection varies for individuals and so does the outcome. Its not a given everyone will get it it and have the most severe outcome.
If people follow good advice the risk of a bad outcome is much smaller than perceived for many of us.

As long as people ignore good advice an increase in R is envitable as is a second spike, which i would predict November, December just as many peoples guard has dropped and the Christmas period of social gatherings and parties begins.D6Nutz wrote:Revealed: The Government Isn’t Certain The Coronavirus 'R' Rate Is Below 1 In England

Re: Coronavirus - hype or pandemlc?
While it is technically a new infectious virus for humans , it is a member of a huge family of viruses that we have been aware of for a long time . Some we deal with on a regular basis , colds and flu, others like sars and covid are not so common , the best we have managed to combat these viruses is the Flu vaccine which is about 65% effective . I don't believe that a truly effective vaccine for these viruses will ever be found as they mutate far too quickly for us to respond to . The best we can hope for is a less deadly mutation that doesn't kill the host , which would also be beneficial for the virus . We will however remain susceptible to certain strains which will appear from time to time , like the Spanish , Asian and Russian flu pandemics .

I think i did say its beaten medical science ' to date'. They are working on a vaccine. There is no way i am heading the queue of those taking it to see if it works.Blade wrote:I wouldnt say its beaten medical science yet, either.

The reason they cannot immunise against the common cold is because there are so many variants ( over 160) but its not usually dangerous to humans. This virus is.
I know a few people who have had it and have recovered but so far it seems to have left its mark if you had the cough with it. And this is 3 months later.
I think its likely Jan and Feb next year when it will hit hard again if it does flare up. Having seen how so many people have reacted to being let out of lockdown, its inevitable to my mind.

Ever heard of the "Speed Kills" campaign..... Anyone want to put their hand up after seeing that campaign and reducing their speed on country lanes ??????
We are, in general, a nation of selfish twats. If we believe something may affect us (like the start of the pandemic) we'll follow the rules, when we don't think it will affect us anymore then the rules get ignored as.. "well, it'll never happen to me".. This applies to viruses, car crashes, taking a bad pill..... etc...

Have people taken the Speed kills campaign as seriously as they have the Coronavirus threat? Is it a national point of conversation, is there daily goverment updates?
I would suggest they haven't, yet most people have a higher risk of death from a RTA, its just many (not all) are ignorant and oblivious to it as their rushing round in their little bubble.
Monty puts it well with his example of a bag of sweets

Not much doubt we are not being told the whole story.
https://www.theguardian.com/world/2020/ ... NYQPRwFGVs" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
I was reading yesterday, the figures of deaths overall from the period March to June show the number of people who died in that period is nearly 70,000 higher than this time last year.

Re: Coronavirus - hype or pandemlc?
Just to give a bit of perspective , my GD was born June 13th , her actual due date was July 28th . My GD was taken to the HDU immediately and within hours tested positive for covid. My daughters test came back negative . Both tests came back within 18 hours and an investigation as to how the baby contracted it . Both have had another 2 tests, daughter negative and GD still positive
MY GD came home today which was not expected so soon and fit and well, just waiting for the results of her last test but even if still positive there is no reason she should go back to hospital if fit and healthy and doing OK . She is 4lb 1oz .
I think some are getting too fixated with this virus , far bigger things to worry about IMO
