Re: Everything Photography
I actually did a photography A Level for a year, quite exciting developing your own pictures in a dark room, not done any for years though.

Re: Everything Photography
Question for you.. how do you focus on a moving target? For example a dog running towards you
there are different Autofocus modes , the terminology differs somewhat between Nikon and Canon I believe its Continuous or AF-C on Nikon cameras and AI Servo AF on Canon cameras , your lens should also have an AF mode , use both and you are good to go . I always try to let the technology work for me , trying to manual focus on a fast moving object is really hard and modern electronics are really fast . I am a lazy bastard too so if there is an easy way I will usually find it and exploit it .

Re: Everything Photography
I have to say I am really enjoying my photography, main focus (ha ha) is nature, but I do have a go when I get a chance for some action shots.
I am also liking long exposure stuff, night shots and waterfalls... Everyday is a school day. However I dont think I could camp out in one spot for hours on end to get the shot. I just amble about for miles and snap what I like at the time.

Re: Everything Photography
Jack - Does it matter that I have back-button focus set up in terms of AF-C? Or do I just button bash if I'm trying to get multiple shots in the hope of a good one?

Re: Everything Photography
does it still focus on a halfpush of the shutter button ?
if not you will have to keep your finger on the back focus button and shoot , the AF should be quick enough to keep up with a dog or a horse , it's not yet quick enough to keep up with motorbikes , thankfully or I'd be out of work .
Always take multiple shots you can never guarantee the first shot is the one you want regardless of how well you think you have planned the shot .

Re: Everything Photography
Ah okay.. yeah I guess I can hold the back button down then. I had to deactivate the half-press button focus otherwise it would override the back button focus.
I'll give that a go then because we missed out on so many shots that way. I'd focus on the ground roughly where I think the dog was going then hold the shutter button and hope for 1 good shot - I got maybe 1 good shot out of 50.

How would everyone feel about a friendly "Photo of the Month" competition?
I'm thinking I can set a fairly vague task to allow for more creativity and we all vote the winner who then sets the following month's challenge? Just some fun

Re: Everything Photography
Had a great Bank Holiday weekend, about 2000 snaps to sort through ranging from baby pictures to a wedding reception to a day out with family at some local gardens.
While at the gardens I wanted to do some silhouette shots.. now, I know how to do them on my phone's camera (tap on the sun to set exposure and then the foreground is plain black) but could I get it to work yesterday on the DSLR??? Hell no.
I had metering set to spot, back button focus set to AF ON/Only, focus on the people to maintain a sharp image on them, f11, ISO100, compose the shot so the 'spot' is in the bright light and shoot. Failure. I deleted the images there and then so don't have the failed result to show but there was always a noticeable amount of light on them. I've rescued images with a darker foreground than that in Lightroom so I knew it was too bright at the time. Shutter speed was up around 1/500

Re: Everything Photography
@Frankie.. do you have the uncompressed swan image available? I'd love to include that in my wallpaper sequence for my office computer if you're okay with that

Some of you may have seen my post to Facebook today. Our local Springer Spaniel dog walking group held a Christmas party hosting approximately 50 Springers and raising over £600 for a local rescue center which is at risk of shutting down.
Here are a few of my favourite photos of the day:

Re: Everything Photography
This photo may look over the top on the eyes but I have not locally edited them.
The edits to this photo include all the basic stuff: exposure correction, colour temperature, whites/blacks and a bit of vignetting.
I nailed the focus and am so happy with this photo. Edit: I've just checked the image on here and due to compression it doesn't appear particularly sharp at 1:1
