Sitting in Darwin waiting for fly out to the platform tomorrow. Was hoping I was going to fail my PCR having had COVID so recently and be held back for a few days, but was negative damnit!

A spot of Pre-work mechanicing, the brakes on the cage have been squealing with new discs and pads so I have cleaned the leading chamfers of the pads and replaced the anti-rattle shims. If that doesn't work then I will have to replace the pads again, it's embarrassing getting home in the small hours of the morning *Screeeeeeecch*
Euro car parts Eicher brand, a mechanic friend told me the brand as I talked through the symptoms with him so they're apparently known for it.

My Vito failed it's MOT this year on a corroded brake line. After replacing it, & whilst bleeding the fluid, I noticed that my NSF wheel seemed to be dragging very slightly. I'm a bit OCD about that sort of stuff, and I knew the caliper should be ok as I'd overhauled them myself.Stonesie wrote:A spot of Pre-work mechanicing, the brakes on the cage have been squealing with new discs and pads so I have cleaned the leading chamfers of the pads and replaced the anti-rattle shims. I removed the pads, and discovered that one of the pads had detached from the backplate.!
The design of the Brembo caliper is such that the loose pad material was retained, and the system worked. Without removing the pads it was virtually impossible to see this (the MOT inspector had no chance). The pads were only about 15-20% worn at most, but when I looked at my Vito receipts file they were 4 years old & they were Eicher from Eurocarparts.
I replaced them with Brembo pads before taking my Vito back for it's free re-test.
The applicable moral (for me) was "cheapest isn't the least expensive".

Yeah, I should have bought slightly more expensive EBC ultimax pads, those will be the replacements if these keep squealing as £25 is not much and I have used them for years, even on a BMW E30 track car (Yellowstuff on that though). I did check to see if the pad was separating from the back plate and it all looks good at the moment.

You're obviously better informed mate.: In all my years I had never heard of pad material becoming detached, and I was truly shocked.Stonesie wrote:.... I did check to see if the pad was separating from the back plate and it all looks good at the moment.
What got to me most was that they would still be in there if the MOT guy hadn't cribbed a tiny bit of rust on a brake pipe elsewhere on the Van. Normal inspection they looked to have plenty of meat on them, and most people would be perfectly accepting of a tiny bit of rotation resistance.
The thought of the entire lump of friction material being jettisoned, and the potential consequence, makes a chill run down my spine.

10 years as a "Grease Monkey", unfortunately I only ever got In-House training which is not worth the paper it's written on to any other company. I miss the problem solving aspect of being a mechanic.
I have usually seen pad separation on old pads when they stick in the calliper at the ends so when the brakes are used the steel back plate flexes, the pad material can't flex so brakes away.

Booked today off work so I've been looking after our Son and dog, and now we are at soft play. It's great to see the confidence my boy has, confidence I never had!

Re: What are you doing today ??
Byron has come for a few bike rides with me but so far Jorja has declined each time I’ve asked her.
Then out of the blue I get this message today.
Let’s see if that interest holds till I get home. I’m mildly wondering if I’m getting buttered up so she can ask for something

I'm at a mate's mother's 80th birthday barbeque in the park. A morgue probably has more appeal.

Last time I did one of those it was scarry, not the course material but the other people in the room and what they didn't know about driving.
I'm just off to bed after my shift, today's plan is to change the pads on the cage and prep the bike for 5 day's in Wales.
