Episode one seems good, its got a decent storyline that has got good potential and had a full on lesbian sex scene in the first 30 mins. Ideal viewing for a crowded train. Lol.

Imho you should read Stieg Larsson's three books, and
then see that film ( if you feel you need to). As with many books that work well on paper, it's translation into the visual media is always going to be lacking ..

Been watching the Punisher on Netflix, loving it, really dark and gritty but I don't feel its violent just for the sake of it which is always a concern with that character. Big thumbs up from me!
although I am biased coz I am a self confessed comic book geek!

Punisher was one of the few marvel comics I bought when I was into them.

Its really very good so far, a lot of talk has been about how it glorfies violence but I must be honest I think its the complete opposite, It really focuses on the traumas and hardship of soldiers coming back to a civilian life and dealing with PTSD. Personally I think it does the complete opposite of glorifying it and showing the horror of violence if that makes sense

I always figure it similarly ...read the books later. - With a book you draw your own imagery, with a movie you're seeing a collage of other people's imagery - usually compacted, and the two seldom coincide .

Fwiw I believe that books always have the edge for a fundamentally different reason.
IMO when you read a story book it can put you into the minds & thoughts of the characters, so you can immerse yourself into the narrative.
However with a film you are simply observing the actions of the actors. -Far more superficial IMHO.
Adding a narrator is a way that has been use to attempt to address this fundamental shortfall, however the few number of films that adopt that approach suggests that it is not very successful.?

Like "Dune"....major narrator FAIL!! (But that movie failed in every way possible).
Worked VERY well for 'The Shawshank Redemption' though.....but that's the only one that comes to mind.
