Chuff me, lucky escape there dude. Could have been much much worse! Very glad you're OKish.

I'm happy to say the Yaris driver was fine, scared half to death but no injuries.

I went to the doctors this morning and booked myself in for next Monday to have the stitches out, the nurse advised me to have a week off until then so I've signed off sick for a week.
Called the insurance and they are arranging to recover the bike to their workshop, then get it assessed so I should know by Friday if it's a write off or not. With holes in the engine and damage to the bodywork, exhaust headers smashed and the general carnage I would be amazed if the frame was not bent... We will see.

Also failing to pay my fine as the online system doesn't recognise the reference number.

Overall I'm very happy to have got away with a 4 stitch wound and some torn muscles in my lower back.

I had a call from a guy at Lloyds BMW Carlisle, he has had a quick look at the bike and is storing it until the insurance approved repairer picks it up, he said it didn't look good for repair at a glance but would not be stripping it down for proper inspections, he was amazed at how light my injuries are after seeing the state of the bike.

I can't see the hole in the block but it's there, the crash bar lower front bolt ripped a chunk out, upper front bolt was a high tensile one and just snapped, the forces involved were... Significant... Maybe the crash bar absorbed enough to save the frame?

Hope insurance don’t muck around too long and you are back out on a bike again soon.

That might be repairable. I guess it depends on the internal damage.

My main concern is weather or not the frame got twisted, if it did, it's done.
If not then it will probably get a new engine and some body panels and continue on as my bike until it falls apart, with an insurance marker on it I might find myself in negative equity at the end of the finance (PCP) and to be fair I really love this thing so it wouldn't be a hardship.


So far it is still collecting storage charges in Carlisle, the tracker is still there at least.

Those crash bars did their job - i guess they saved your leg?

Yeah the boxer engine and crash bars took the brunt of it, on a normal bike that would have been my leg hitting the car and I might not have kept my right leg attached.

I used to ride with a guy who had a similar accident but on his left, we call him 'Peg Leg' and his bikes have an electronic gear shifter fitted.

Just got a ping from Datatool, my bike is now in Surrey, bit of a jump from Carlisle but at least things are starting to happen and I might get an update by the weekend.

No update but they did send my insurance renewal quote... £1310

With no decision on the current claim yet that will go up despite protected NCB of 12 years.

I fired up compare the market and got a quote of £670 from Bennett's, not good, not terrible

Then added my claim and CD30 (Careless/inconsiderate driving) and hit "get quotes"... The cheapest was Bikesure at £1323... Why do we protect that NCB again?

I'm almost hoping they write it off now, so I can get something a little cheaper to insure like the rare Aprilia Caponord 1200 (£370 fully comp and there's only 2 on autotrader).

They're doing something with it as I have had a theft alert from Datatool this morning.

This is why I never bother protecting my NCB.

Got a message from the repair company and they are recommending to my insurance that the bike is beyond economical repair.

So it looks like that's it for this one.

As you were clearly jelling with it Stonsie, would it be worth asking the repair company what damage their engineer had identified.? Then, if the frame happens to be ok & you are comfortable with your ability to rectify what damage there is, making an offer for the salvage yourself.

I can't think of anything but the frame which would write it off so I'm going to let it go, I can get another in a couple of years after the insurance calms down a bit.

The most sensible option would be to get the payout, settle the finance and wait until spring to get another, cheaper to insure bike...

On the other hand I want to get back out there ASAP.

Labour costs and plastic bits account for a lot of write offs I think..

If the engine casing is prices for a days labour, say, in a BMW workshop that quickly adds up..
