I have to confess my hybrid car has been a revelation. I like the fact it can drive round at some speeds nit using any petrol. It’s averaging 62mpg at the moment but on some local urban trips it will reach 75mpg with not much effort.

I like the fact it whirs around town on electric only and I didn’t think I would say that.

32 mpg for me, but I don't really do many short trips. But I honestly do believe that they're perfect for about 90% of us.

I have just ordered a Tesla ,I was a massive sceptic of electric cars but after driving a few its the future

Google says that a driver is allowed to use an automated lane- keeping system & take their hands off the wheel up to a max. speed of 37mph.... otherwise attempting to let the car "drive itself" is illegal.
...At least, that's the first thing that came up on the web, so it must be right, right?

mine isnt speed restricted at all, but warns you when it doesnt feel your hands on the wheel after a certain time

I think you need to be sat in the drivers seat with your hands on the wheel in the Tesla. It is proper auto drive though I think. A friend has one.

In the US they have full self driving still in beta testing but it's already about 10x safer than their national average driver. I don't think they have approval from our government for that yet.

It is cool seeing the car visualise it's surroundings on the screen and the Model 3 performance I had a go in was superbike fast and eerily quiet at the same time... I really want one but that's a long term goal.

The trouble is, because they're using cameras for this, there are certain scenarios where the car will pilot itself at full speed into the back of standstill traffic. It's generally safer I agree, but they aren't ready to ditch the manual controls just yet.

Ultimately though the vehicles will all be talking to each other and know what the others are about to do.

Eventually yes, but we're a good 25 years from that at least IMO. While a cheap electric car costs 3x that of a cheap petrol car (brand new) there's no way it can be adopted en mass. I can't afford one.
