I get the impression the golden age of motorcycling may have peaked. Emissions and noise regulations mean more weight each time.

Isn't much of the increase down to a difference in the way the weights are now taken (dry - wet).?

Euro 5 bikes have another cat in them so that'll explain some of the increase.

with the additional catalytic converter surely responsible for the increase.

I disagree, all of this emissions stuff is making manufactures work for their sales again.

The good thing about all of this is that the weighty emissions stuff is all bolt on so you can take it straight off again. The internal emissions stuff which you can't see is golden! Better efficiency from engine coatings, better longevity, more power to be unleashed due to "mapping down" for the purposes of emissions, etc, etc.

The bikes we have on sale today are even better than their last models - you just have to unlock them

Not if you want to keep your warranty.

Most of the bike makers lock their ECUs now so you can rip the OEM exhaust system out but you can't retune the bike.

There's that. But once the warranty has expired do what you like (y)

I see it as a good thing anyway, companies like Ricardo are turning away customers because they're working to capacity. Loads of manufactures after their expertise on how to improve emissions and retain performance. Engines these days are so much better than even just 5 years ago

Wont be long before removing something throws up a warning light and that will be an MOT failure. It's already started tbh.

Currently there are work arounds for all of this. Admittedly, the manufacture will know what's been done to it whenever they plug it into their computer as the bike will log everything.

True story - Mclaren had an F1 in for a regular service and informed the owner their "black box" was faulty due to consistently high speed readings. Most days this car was reporting speeds of 230+mph. What Mclaren didn't realise was where this car was being used and the owner frequently used the Autobahn where he would max out the car most days.

Insurance will be the big player in making changes from standard obsolete.

The speed limiters being introduced into cars in two years time will be able to be switched off.

But how long before insurances companies say that switching it off nulls the insurance?

Or to remove an emissions item means having to permanently destroy a part. It is how current EU silencers have to be e.g. Welded baffles

Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying they're better in standard form but the actual technology is significantly better than the previous updates.

Also, most of us have 6kg or significantly more we could lose - just saying

I think we are at the peak right now, Cav.

Climate change will be the biggest political issue out there in ten years time, IMHO.

Speak for yourself.
Anyway, it's not like people can just unbolt or swap out body parts to pare down their weight.

"Dwarves"????

Dwarfs. 'Dwarves' is some Tolkien or Dungeons & Dragons/Greyskull nonsense dreamed up by the fantasyland geek squad nerds. Losers.
