Right, I know I'm probably going to regret asking.. But....

With the lack of contracts about I'm starting to look at locations a bit further afield, and where commuting sucks.. therefore the only option is a second bike, but a cheap commuter hack.

I'm thinking max £2k, must be faired and comfortable. Bonus points for top boxes / panniers / heated grips / etc, negative points for sports bikes.

Suggestions please....

V4 Honda's go for ever. Plenty have gone over 100k with no issues.

That's a top shout. I'm not that bothered about the cat c or the fairing damage.

Lot of motorcycle for the money and ticks all the boxes with paniers and heated grips.

Shaft drive and very cheap to run, just don't expect excitement.

Depends on whAt distance you are considering travelling but don't rule out a 125cc scooter. 100+ mpg means your money goes a long way. Plenty of scooters have 30,000+ miles on them.

That's a very good point. The two contracts in looking at are between 80 to 100 miles per day, mostly at motorway / dual carriageway speeds.

@stonsie a shaftie is a good shout given the mileage and my love of maintenance.

I used a honda CBF600 for exactly that, I was doing 60 miles a day all weathers, its bikin faired, which for a commuter I think is better, you get the protection but maintenance is easier as you don't have to remove half the bike before working on it, it was really comfy to be fair, seat and screen height is adjustable. 7

They are already sort of ugly so a top box suits them, I picked up an 04 model with 20k miles for £1500, I put another 15k miles on it, basic maintenance and sold it for £900 18 months later

So, I got offered the contract that is just under 100 motorway miles per day. I get what your saying CT, but I think I would prefer protection over maintenance. I'll be riding a lot more than tinkering.

The viffer is probably just in the lead, mainly because it's a Honda and they just go on for ever

I think you've answered your own question Nutz Honda were also at their peak on quality then so should be a reliable bike if all the consumable items are in good order.

Congrats on the new contract I assume it's fairly lengthy if yiur investing in new transport, which is good to hear

Yep, I would go with the Honda as well. Those VRFs are pretty solid and the engines are a peach. The trumpet is a good shout but between the two I would go for the Jap just for peace of mind on daily use and getting parts if you need them.
