if you were advising your formerself who was about to start out as a biker about the dangers of being a motorcyclist then what tips would you give your younger self?

In my case I think I woul;d say something about not trusting car drivers to stay put as I got injured by a bloke who turned right across my path at point blank range, maybe if i had been expecting it i might have been going that bit slower, been more ready to manoeuvre and had my fingers ready to brake but i still don't really know what you can do to protect yourself from that kind of behaviour.

You can't have enough training.

Ride like no one has seen you.

Cake makes you fat.

This!

Plus...."Santiago Canyon Road is NOT your own private racetrack!" (it's a public racetrack instead).

Honorable memtion to "learning to walk again is not all it's cracked up to be" etc.

Don't ride into a dust storm on the Kathmandu ring road, your front teeth will never forgive you. Also open face helmets suck!

Tbh I was told not to trust cagers, but learned the lesson the hard way after 1 month on two wheels.

1, Don’t listen to advice about bikes from people that don’t ride.
2, Buy decent gear and wear it, a denim jacket & DM’s are not good enough.
3, When Trackdays take off - go and book one ASAP, it’ll make you safer on the road.
4, Buy and enjoy at least one, big, fast two stroke before youre 25.

Proper gear worn at all times even to the shops
Do some track days and leave the heroics for the track
Ride a pushbike as well it’s even scarier with cages trying to kill you
Learn basic maintenance
Don’t wear a polite vest ever

Listen to your Mum :(

Number of times as a teenager in the 70's she told me that if I insisted on wearing jacket and jeans and did not cover the gap between I would end up with a bad back.

She kept telling me that if I did not want to wear full leathers or a longer jacket I should wear smething like a kidney belt. I was a teenager, I thought how uncool but anyway, I know better? She was only a very qualified nurse after all so what did she know :?

How I wish now I had listened :(

hmm..some good answers there but, putting it another way, what are your greatest anxieties about being a motorcyclist?

my current one is letting my guard drop, i try to be alert and spot things ahead but then my attention goes and i'm on 'autopilot', in a kind of day dream induced by the exhaust note and rythm of bends i suppose and before i know it i've done miles without really taking much notice of other vehicles. gulp.

Yep id say getting points on lisence which will increase my insurance!
Why can't I get my knee down (on track) and you watch people do it with ease on the same track!!
Cold tyres don't trust them - Dunlop = crap supercorsas = crap

If I could advise my younger self it would be a complete waste of time as I probably wouldn't have listened to myself anyway :D

Kwacky I went on a wheelie school day but in all honesty it was pissing it down pretty heavily at times and it put me off, all I could think about was coming off lol. I did snake the rear a fair bit which shook me right up but apparently as glad to watch haha

Yup add that to my list. I only do 1 foot high wheelies on purpose, any bigger and it’s purely by accident!

I'd be happy with 1 foot ones.

Did a really high one once....bike came down quick and I smashed me nuts on the tank so hard I almost passed out. End of wheelie career....
