Five WFX1 Waterproof gloves - review

These are essentially sports gloves designed to be used in crappy wet and wintery conditions.

They look large and bulky but they're surprisingly light. There's loads of armour on them, probably more than you would need for a winter glove, but protection is better than none.

There's armour on the side of the hand, which I presume is to protect your carpal and metacarpals. That armour comes round to the inside of the hand so the palm is protected as well. That high level or armour is on the wrist as well.

The leather is thicker than you would expect on the inside aspect of a summer glove. It's not an issue but with the lining you know you're wearing something designed for the cooler months.

The fit is good, slightly tight but I expect them to stretch a little. The zip and straps make sure they don't move once you've got them on. Although the leather is thick on the palm it doesn't bunch up, but the armour on the palm does feel strange at first. Feel with the controls is good, more so than you get with your usual winter gloves but less than summer gloves.

Despite the thinsulate lining they're not too warm to wear on late summer September evening.

Blinking hell!! Thanks for letting me know. I see they do mid season gloves as well which I am in need of currently as only have summer and winter gloves at the moment!

They do cheaper winter gloves which don't have so much armour in them. They're supposed to be very good.

I wanted to get some gloves I could use most of the year. Touring this year was a pain because I didn't know if I should have summer gloves or waterproof gloves, so I was going away with two pairs with me. These mean I don't have that problem.

I like the idea of the armour to be honest. It's for your protection and it's nice to know they will do the job correctly so you don't have to think about while riding if the worst was too happen (if that makes sense)

Just to bring this thread up again, these gloves not only look good, but having felt the insides of Kwacky's gloves today, they feel glorious.

Putting my Alpinestars back on after feeling that felt like wrapping my hands in rough hewn hessian mittens speckled with dog shit.
If I had to commit to winter riding I would justify the cost of those in a heartbeat. My current situation doesn't require me to ride in the cold, so I can't. But if their summer gloves are similar I could well be convinced.

Cheers mate. They are top quality.

Five do a range of gloves. Mine are in the middle of the price range for winter/wet riding.

Nice and warm this morning, not hot. I don't like wearing gloves that bake your digits when it's not sub zero temps outside.

It'll be interesting to see how warm they keep my hands when it's really cold.

Constant rain this morning but not that heavy. Gloves seemed to be fine as I would expect. I need a real downpour to properly test them out.

Very waterproof but not very warm when it's freezing. My hands were fine but my finger tips were frozen.

They started leaking this morning. Not much but water is coming in via the fingertips, which is where I was noticing the cold. I suspect there's a stitching issue but I can't see anything wrong with them.

Anyway, the supplier replied straight away and they're sending me a pre-paid bag to return them for inspection.

Yeah, shame about the gloves though.

They're a brand new model so I'm wondering if they got something wrong in the manufacturing process.

They've sent me a label today so I can post them off.

I've ordered a pair of RST gloves to tide me over while the Five gloves are getting repaired or replaced.

RST Gloves have arrived. That's quick service. They certainly feel budget compared to the Five Gloves but they are half the price. I'll wear them on the ride home and see how they get on.
