Yes, and expect it to get much worse over the next 12 months as thousands of knuckle-dragging douchebags feel enabled by Tory rhetoric in the media.

Cats. Loads of my neighbours have bought cats recently. There's a constant dispute going on over territory. As a result you can hear cats fighting around the clock and there's loads of cat shit everywhere as they mark their territory.

I get that over here from time to time, seems to have calmed down a bit lately, obviously they have set their boundaries. The bloody racket, and always at about 2 or 3 in the morning....

My mountain bike frame developed a crack on the inside of the frame in one of the welds. The manufacture (Trek) were really good about taking the bike in and replacing the frame under warranty. - Here starts the not so good stuff.

My bike was a 2021 model, a generation 5 frame. The replacement frame is the new 2024 generation 6 frame.. brilliant.. however.. the seat post diameter, fork travel and the bottom bracket are all not compatible... With a warranty frame replacement they swap over all old components onto the new frame and you're expected to buy the other bits.

So.. £200 for a new seat post, £600-1300 for a new fork and upwards of £100 for a bottom bracket.... because they don't have any of the old frames.

I talk with the store manager and explain that I'd have been happy to have the old frame and I didn't ask for the "upgrade" so why should I now be out of pocket.. after all, it was a manufacturing defect that brought me to this situation.

Roll forward to yesterday when I collected my new bike. They ordered a new dropper seat post and installed it, installed my old (short) fork and fitted the bottom bracket I supplied them with.

They LOST my old aftermarket shock absorber on the generation 5 bike (also not compatible) and can't find the OEM one I also supplied them with. £600 of my own money they LOST! It's no good to me anyway and I'd be selling it but that is beside the point. I've now pressed upon them that I would be happy to forget the shock if they can supply me with the top of the range fork (their trade price is similar to what I paid).

I'm now awaiting a call from them this evening.

I’d certainly be pushing hard for compensation. Doesn’t sound good service 🙄

thats total shite... personally I would have dug my heels in at the "here's a different frame stage". At no point should their defect have cost you money. if they couldn't provide a like for like then either a refund or upgrade at their cost.

The losing your parts is beyond belief. Even then, they should have come to you with, "opps, we've done this, but we can sort it like this" not you having to push it with them.

That's enough for me to never consider a Trek

That's taking the piss. They've mucked up at pretty much every stage.

As everyone else above, they appear to be a total shower.!
You are dealing with a company, as such should expect a professional level of service and care. It would appear that they have utterly failed in that respect..

Trek, as you wrote, are REALLY good about replacing frames....upgrading the parts is usually on you. I get the vibe that the shop is foisting new parts on you so that they get something out of the deal other than a bike-build, which they'd probably have to haggle with Trek over.
But the bike is going to need the new parts anyway so......?

I guess I'm saying just buy the parts and be done with it...it's a new frame, and it's not going anywhere without them, is it....??

That's one way of looking at it. The other way is.. they've said they're going to sort the fork but haven't. They also lost my £5/600 shock.. so a new top spec fork as a replacement should be sufficient

I think even then you are letting them off too lightly. You already bought a complete bike. That failed. I still find it ridiculous that because they couldn't replace the frame with the same model, it's up to you to cover costs to have a functional bike again. Did they offer you a refund on your original bike as an alternative to the upgraded frame that you'd have to furnish at your own cost?

And all that doesn't even touch the fact they've lost your parts

I doubt they "lost" your shock. That thing is probably on another bike already, no doubt wending it's way down some rugged single-track as we speak.
.....That's probably not a comforting thought, but I know how bike shops, and specifically bike wrenches are when it comes to gear...it's all just "stuff" to them.

**** right off with Trek now. The store manager has changed his tune and now won't be supplying me with a fork. But they have found my aftermarket shock. I will not be returning custom.
