You know my experience with not opting into the works private health scheme and it biting me on the ass 3 consecutive years:

2017 - Right knee ACL tear
2018 - Severe Concussion and Amnesia
2019 - Left knee ACL rupture and MCL tear

I'd have had way more than my money's worth out of the scheme !!!

More life lessons from this year.

You ensure your vehicles, and do any of them equal a years wages???

Insure your income and insure your health. It won’t feel like a waste when you are laid up for a year off work.

Believe me on this one.

I'm very fortunate that the company I work for are very good with their sick pay (as I know) so it wouldn't be worthwhile for me. I count it as my sponsorship for trackdays ;)

I used to feel the same way Cav, and I’m extremely fortunate that top level medical insurance and income protection is part of my package. I wouldn’t go without it again even if it means paying for it myself.

Sick leave is one thing, but they going to pay you for up to 2 yrs at 75% of your income?

So I just checked mine and I get 26 weeks full pay then I would have to apply to an insurance TPI scheme which would provide "half your pensionable salary at the time of disablement". Probably works out around 40% of my salary.

I'm guessing I wouldn't be eligible for that as well as a private insurance if I took one out? Probably fraud isn't it?!

That is good, I get 10 days sick a year!

I stand corrected then mate, no company in the industries I’ve been in have those sort of conditions here in Aus or NZ. So you’re probably right, not much point for income protection

Crikey.. I get 7 days without a medical note and only after the first 3 of those do you get questioned. So that's 21 days without medical evidence / doctor's visit.

Because I do 21 day swings offshore, if I can’t get out for a full swing due to illness/Injury that wipes out just over 2 years sick leave.

When you're offshore for 21 days, do you have to work all 21 days straight??

Takes one to know one (lol)

Yes D, 21 x 12.5 hr min days, but not unusual to pull a few 14hr days, especially if there is a emergency incident to respond too.

Every second time offshore is nights, and the same thing, 21 nights straight. Except I fly off in the morning after my last night, so usually go about 30 hrs before I see my bed at home from getting up for my last night shift. Getting home involves a 1.5 hr helicopter flight, a 1 hour and a 5 hour commercial airline flight, then a 1.5-2 hr cab ride.

It makes you feel very fecking old

You literally have no life in those 21 days but I guess that's why the pay is so much higher than an onshore job.

I suppose you can get a bit of kip on the journeys back? Or do you end up feeling worse because of it?

It’s weird, after nights because I haven’t seen the morning sun for ages (get about an hour of evening light) it wakes me right up. I usually get more kip on the helicopter after days than I do nights. If I do get any sleep on the journey it’s usually no more than an hour in total.

And no you have no life Offshore at all. I load my iPad up with a tv series but generally watch some thing every 2-3 days because you are so buggered (tropical heat and humidity) you just want to go to sleep. A shower and bed is the biggest luxury.

I get good breaks at home. 4 weeks after days and 5 weeks after nights. And yes the golden handcuffs (salary) is what keeps me there.

Can’t believe I’m looking forward to going back to all that lol

I'd be interested in doing offshore stuff but don't think I could do it for long - I don't even know what the wage is in the UK or how you'd find the jobs. Just never looked into it
