Tank Slap - Motorcycle Forum

Check out my new carbon fibre bling... Came off during the annual fest with the 675.cc lot around Leicestershire... About 5 miles from Melton Mowbray, on an unfamiliar road was going over a crest and somehow upset the bike which led to an , ahem, "tank slap" and by the time I'd recovered it I was on the slippy green stuff doing about 50mph... The outcome was inevitable, it was just a case of how and when I was gonna bin it!
Bike hit a small ditch which spat me off over the top and ended up going through some trees/bushes and lands about 20 feet from the bike.
Spent couple of days in Nottingham hospital with 2 broken vertebrae, broken rib, fractured sternum and badly bruised right leg... Gotta wear the back brace for around 8 weeks and keep popping the morphine!
Bike looks like it will be a write-off, and I've now given my already anti-bike wife all the ammo she needs to keep me off the bike for good...!

Ouch and then ouch.

Sounds like a strange off.

How about a few of us cone round on our bikes and tell Mrs Deano about our crashes, would that help?

Jesus mate you did a good job! You sound pretty upbeat which is good to hear, but maybe that's just the drugs . Glad you got good care and have a path forward for recovery.

Girls don't get the whole falling off thing huh, we accept it as part of our chosen past time, we don't like it or enjoy it, but realise it's likely.

Cheers everyone, have been signed off for at least a fortnight but can see it going beyond that.
I've never crashed and written anything off before, car or bike, assuming it is written off what's the insurance company likely to do... I assume, being insurance arseholes, that they won't somehow just hand over a nice cheque for the full amount it's insured for will they?
They're already trying to screw me over with my helmet and leathers cover saying the value goes down a percentage for each year I've owned em or some bullocks like that...

Depreciation is standard when paying out for leathers and helmet. Get a local bike shop to do a quote for the replacement gear, it should work out better that way. My insurers paid me more than I said I would accept because they asked me for a quote.

Someone will assess the bike and make you an offer. Look online to see what near identical bikes are going for and counter offer.

Yeah bought and paid for... Valued at £2500 which is exactly what I paid for it just over a year ago, similar ones are going for anything between £2000-£3500!
I understand that things depreciate over time but I can't go to J&S and say "can I have a second hand helmet that's been worn for three year but is in really good condition and I'll give you 40% less than it's market value please..."
I thought if anything in the world would be on a no quibble new for old basis it would be your helmet!

Which is why getting a quote for new stuff works. The insurer works from the quote then knocks a bit off because your stuff isn't new.

Go somewhere that hasn't got a sale on and it should work out.

Yeah that makes kwacky and I understand all that but the way they said the were gonna do it is they've taken the details off me what the make/model of it all is etc: and they're gonna do some research on the retail price of it all then take a percentage off that, I'm on a hiding to nothing really, only positive is the cover was included within my policy as opposed to 'extra' cover, i was with Bennett's.

Within regards to the bike when I they wrote mine off they gave me more than I had paid or valued it at. They looked at the market and gave me a very reasonable pay out. I heard stories of having to fight for a better price but with me this was not the case I hope it all goes though easily and you get the money you want.

I'd do what Kwacly has suggested mate. Get a quote for all your gear like for like and give them it and say this is what I need to cover my kit. You had good stuff mate and the proper kit does not come cheap as you know. Hope it all works out. If it needs a bit of a fight then do it

Don't settle for anything your not happy with Mike and challenge it with reasoned argument backed up by facts and figures they can't ignore.
