New Ducati 955

There's quite a few rumours about at the moment. There is a new bike due and I've read of a naked (new monster?) and an 899s.

955 and 899s sound absolutely stunning let's hope there is some truth in the rumours.

No personal experience but quite a few reviews suggest the 899 is slow and comparing it to 200bhp superbike I can understand it may seem a little lacking (relatively obviously) so a capacity increase and subsequent power upgrade could be the icing on the cake and make it the perfect middle weight.

Ducati made a 955 a year before Triumph did.

There wont be an 899S as it will push the price too close to the base 1299.

But still considerably cheaper than a 1299s and not everyone wants the increased power, insurance premiums and tyre costs of the 1299.

Only my opinion but I would happily consider a 899s with forged wheels and ohlins semi active suspension for £14500 instead of a £16700 base model 1299.

Has Ducati given up on the middle sized engine sports bike? It seems that they've constantly increased capacity and the middleweight has now become the heavyweight.

I would have put money on them not upping the capacity as it would put it too close to litre bike. Do like the sound of a 955 triple though. The 899 has 148 bhp so they must be looking at 160-170 next?

It was and probably one of their best. Certainly the most beautiful.

I personally can't see Ducati making a triple as there sports bike roots are well and truly lodged in the vtwin camp. Happy to be proved wrong though.

Regards middleweight etc I think that's exactly what the 899 is and you have to see it more as middleweight power and performance rather than middleweight capacity.

The independent dyno results I have seen are circa 128bhp I think Ducati quoting 148-150 bhp is very much exaggerated and a slight capacity increase to 955 could be the injection the 899 needs.

The cc increase gives you more torque but not necessarily much more BHP you need more RPMs for that

I thought more torque at the same revs equals more bhp as bhp is just a mathematical figure derived from torque and revs ?

You need to swap a bhp for a torque in that last part

Someone somewhere with far more engineering knowledge than me has worked out that 955 is the most logical next capacity for the the over square Superquadro engine as the design as certain limitations to being made a bigge cubic capacity. What the 899 does lack is a bit of torque to make it easier to ride when not caning it.
If they do a 955 with more torque, an autoblipper and some of the other refinements from the 1299 then my name will be on the waiting list.

Yes it is, but note I said "not necessarily much more BHP" a few cc won't make much difference to the BHP but another 1000 rpms will.

My next bike could well be a Ducati as always fancied and been a long time fan of Ducati sportsbikes and could well fancy a 899, 955 or 1299.

However there is one fly in that ointment, Yamaha R1 Cross plane crank, forged wheels, ohlins semi active, 6 axis all singing all dancing traction / electronic package, carbon body work, alloy tank. It's one of my current dream bikes

Sports bike market maybe declining but it's becoming more hardcore with some very high spec bikes avialable.
