Datatool S4 Green Fob issue

Post by Kwacky »

What I thought was a dead battery in fact turns out to be a fob problem.

I take the fob apart and switch the battery. It works with the old or the new battery.

If I put the grey and the back button on the circuit board, it works.

If I put the circuit board and buttons in the front of the fob, it still works.

If I put the back of the fob on, it no longer works.

If I put the circuit board and the buttons on the back of the fob, it doesn't work.

Something in the back of the fob is stopping it from working, but I can't work out what. I can't see that anything is broken.

Any clues?

My guess would be a hairline crack in one of the copper tracks of the pcb, assembling the board to the back of the fob might be distorting the board slightly and opening up the crack, causing a broken circuit.

Try putting the board including the buttons and battery in the freezer for 20mins and then try it, but using gloves that also been in the freezer (stops your pinkies heating the board back up). If it doesn't work for a bit it's very likely a pcb track crack, the cold shrinks the copper track and if there's a crack it will open up and replicate the fault.

Hth, that's as much as I've got based on your description Kwacky.

A crack in the board makes sense. That'll explain why it doesn't work against the back of the fob, as the circuit is physically supported by that part of the fob casing in a couple of places, allowing it to flex when you press the button.

I've not tried your suggestion, but I have packed the back of the board and that's working now, so again that supports your theory.

You're the best (h)

Worth a warranty claim through the dealer?
