That's proper racing, smoking it up and laying "darkies" everywhere and getting it sideways.Perkles wrote:Bsb 220 Bhp and no traction control
Now about that Speedway bash......

Looks good in black. Looking forward to seeing this in the flesh as reckon pictures probably don't do justice.

Re: 2015 Yamaha R1
It has magnesium used in the frame and magnesium wheels which is not normally recommended for road use so wonder how the rims will hold up on potholed UK roads.

Re: 2015 Yamaha R1
Those can't be the proper race wheels. Not for the road. Can you imagine the claims if wheels started failing?

Re: 2015 Yamaha R1
I m sure your right just seems a weird choice as by time they have beefed them up they will probably be the same weight as aluminium

Re: 2015 Yamaha R1
you can get mag wheels for the road had 2 sets one on my duke and one on 636 they are strong !!! just got to watch out for paint chips then water can degraded them. they were a lot lighter than the standard wheels they replaced. the dukes standard wheels were ally marchesini.
"80mph" sorry officer I possibly could not have done that I'm no Valentino Rossi.

Re: 2015 Yamaha R1
I know magnesium wheels can be certified as OK for roads use but I was advised to avoid them by Dymag when purhcasing my forged wheels as they did not recommend them for road use. He could have supplied them and made more money from me but the weight saving would have been minimal over forged alloy as they have to use more material in the magnesium set to gain the same strength as alloy so sort of defeats the purpose.
Only time will tell if the R1 wheels will fair well on pot holed uk roads.

Re: 2015 Yamaha R1
Interestingly the guy who used to own Dymag advised me that magnesium wheels are OK for road use if checked every two years.
Ducati made two types of mag wheels for the 916, a race set and a road set.

Re: 2015 Yamaha R1
Only going on what he said Duke, and he seemed a decent chap. I think perhaps his angle was magnesium for road use was a lot more money for little gain as they had to use more material to get the same strength as alloy and that made any weight loss minimal.
Personally I wouldn't like a wheel that needs checking every 2 years and no such limitations on regular alloys as far as I'm aware. I guess they need checking more often as there more prone to damage.

Re: 2015 Yamaha R1
Forged alloy is the best compromise i think.
This is what TPCS told me:
Hi Simon,
As you may know I worked at Dymag for 28 years and we sold may wheels for road bikes.
Yes I agreed that an alloy wheels will withstand a little more mainly due to the fact that the wheel in made to JWL spec. All the Dymag wheels were tested to the same spec.
I have used ma wheels on all my bikes (and carbon) with out any issues. And the same goes for other guys at Dymag. If I could find a set of 13" for my kit car then I would use them on the road too..
As for getting them tested; Many factors can come into that.. Mileage, type of use (road/track), any impacts.. Any chips done by tyre fitting should be looked at asap before the good one corrosion sets in..
A rough guide-line I would say every 3-5 years.. Current cost is £210 a pair to strip, crack check and re-powder coat.

Re: 2015 Yamaha R1
Could info. Not suitable for road use IMO if you have to worry about paint chips from tyre changes causing corrosion.

Re: 2015 Yamaha R1
I had a set of 30 year old forged fuchs mag wheels on my 911 and it had done 250,000 miles including driving across the usa, Europe and many many track days
They were refurbed once and checked for cracks ,not even a hint of wear on them
I'd be more worried about using carbon on the road after destroying a set of pushbike wheels last year
Ps looks good in black innit
