How did the heated grips fair on a bitterly cold day on the RR?

So I get the bike ready to go to the Allen Jeffries Bmw shop and it is bitterly cold however the sky is blue and the sun was out. I took the easy option of the motorway and my hands were starting to get cold so I kept tucked In. Arrived at the shop a bit early, while having a bite to eat I was looking round the demonstrator s1000rr which was parked outside. I was then greeted outside by a young chap who offered me a coffee. I went inside and explained I was here for a test ride and the paper work was sorted out. I paid £15 this lowered the excess on the bike to £250. the test ride was 2hrs. Another staff member showed me round the bike and the controls. It only had 91 miles on so it was limited to 8000 rpm. Having a look round the bike the tyres had not been worn in and must have done the 91 miles bolt upright. The Sales man was not pushy in anyway and we chatted for around 10-15 minutes about bikes. He also gave me a decent route to take with the bike,

Sitting on the bike It felt so small, as small as a 600 really compact the throttle and the clutch were very light and the brakes were very sharp. I set off from the dealers with heated grips on (They are Bloody awesome I am getting some) and the first junction I stalled it . This is one issue I had with the bike getting smooth take off's form stand still was not easy. I found I had to give it more revs than I would want and it would pull quite hard but if I didn't it would stall. It had been set in rain mode and i found the throttle felt like it had play in it the first part of the turn did nothing. I stopped to put some petrol in and changed to Sport which was the middle option. As soon as i set off i could tell the difference mainly in the throttle response that bit of play had disappeared and the throttle was nice and smooth. I did try race mode and this made the throttle more aggressive. The can looks ugly but it sounds very nice with a bit of over run barbel when shutting the throttle which like a child i was finding i was making it do it all the time. I got stuck in town traffic not were i wanted to be but i showed how versatile the bike is, tootling through town and filtering with ease. When the roads opened up I the bike started to move. I was having to short shift a lot as the bike was quickly round to 8k mark. It was deceivingly fast catching me out a couple of times with traffic, catching them a bit quickly. I can only imagine how fast this bike is as it was pretty rapid up to 8k and I was only using such a small percentage. The brakes were sharp, it took a bit of adjusting to get used to them but when I did I found they had good feel and were very powerful. With regards to handling I was impressed with how the bike soaked up any bumps but still felt very stiff. The initial turn in was nice and easy to about a 3rd then it kind of needed pushing to go further with the roads being a bit grubby and the tyres still new i was not going to push to far. When over in the corner nothing upset it and felt like I could change the line when I wanted. The quick shifter worked well at low revs and felt nice and smooth although when going up or down the box there was not a mechanical feel and sometimes felt like it had not gone down or up but had. If I changed gear using the clutch there was a horrid click after engaging the gear on the clutch lever.

Over all I think I got to see a small piece of this bikes potential It was easy to ride compact however at no point did i feel cramped and found the bike to be quite roomy It hand plenty of grunt and handled.

I was very impressed with the customer service at Allen Jeffires I have been to quite a few bike shops over the last 6 months and they were leagues above anywhere else i felt at ease in the shop and everyone was very friendly and willing to help or answer any questions.

Greatb write up mate. I went to BMW today and had a little sit on one. It's not as big as I thought it would be, so when the weather brightens up I have decided ill take one out for a little bimble and feel what a litre bike is like!

Nice review. Glad you had fun.

The old one was silly quick so the new one must be just mental. Can't say it does much for me in black, almost like you wouldn't notice what it was at a glance. I'm just not sure you can use all that performance theses days...

Definitely not pretty in black and is it just me or is that quickshifter very exposed? So come on Rocket, how fast does it go at 8000rpm in sixth :D ?

According to gear commander the outgoing model did 106.2 mph at 7800 rpm in top gear and I don't think the new model will be any slower.

Well I didn't concentrate on the speed so much but I saw 120 a few times and glanced a 130 and I did not hit the limiterthe guy at the show room said it would do 140. And it was over 8k more like 8300

It is a mega bike and properly quick with out feeling quick no drama. In some ways I don't think that's a good thing.

A mate of mine recently took one for a test ride and was saying similar things. He'd almost convinced the missus to let him get one as well.

Then he got caught doing 108mph as he went home on his old GSXR600. (doh)

Apparently it was a good job they didn't catch him on the test ride. (angel)

I dont think there is a such a thing as a statutory ban based on speed but generally the CPS look for a ban at anything over 100mph.
