Re: Insurance Scammers
A few were committed but like Monty says most were pathetic. Dash cams seem to be almost a necessity these days. I'm just worried about the footage being used against me as I treat speed limits as a guide outside of residential areas.
Happiness is not a destination. It is a way of life.

Re: Insurance Scammers
Which dashcam did you go for?
@Kiwi - I really wouldn't worry about it. Coppers are unlikely to want your dashcam unless you've been involved in an incident.

Re: Insurance Scammers
I had a chinese one that worked for about 12 months and has been nothing but trouble since and is now dead.Kwacky wrote:Which dashcam did you go for?

I've also debated spending lots of money (more than £200) but then if that fails....
From what i can see Blackvue and Thinkware are the ones to go for.
Thinkware's cheapest offering (F50) has a parking mode (which only tends to be on the expensive ones) if it's wired into the car (you can get a cigarette lighter version too). Plus its tiny. About £75. Not the greatest, but has all the basics.
I can also move it between cars with a spare holder too.
I'll wire it in and review it next month when i'm back in Frogland.

Re: Insurance Scammers
I have a SJCAM sj4000 which works pretty well. It's fairly cheap and works with all the go pro accessories. It was pretty much the first Chinese copy of a go pro which spawned 1000 other copies so you had to be very careful where you bought them from as there were a lot of fakes of the fakes which didn't work as well. http://sjcamhd.com/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

@kwacky would the police be interested if someone reported you for speeding and claim to have evidence of such on their dash cam?Kwacky wrote:Which dashcam did you go for?

I'm guess inadmissible as not calibrated but what's your opinion ?

Re: Insurance Scammers
They could use it if they wanted to but it would mean them measuring the road and doing a whole load of calculations and a detailed report, even that wouldn't be wholly accurate and any defence barrister would find it easy to attack. It's not worth the time and costs for the police to do that. If you were caught by the police at the time they could use other drivers dashcam footage to back up the police prosecution.
Driving without due care or dangerous driving are the ones to watch out for. I must admit to taking a few risks when I'm commuting. If that gets caught on a dashcam and handed over to the police then I could be in trouble. But again it's open to argument how accurate a depiction of your riding is show in the footage.

Re: Insurance Scammers
That's scary actually. People just throwing themselves at cars for insurance claims, are they doing it because they have nothing or are they just greedy f&ckwits. I don't know what I'd do if that happened to me, always knew about the car claims eg braking sharply while some one is behind you so they go into the back of you etc but for a human to just throw themselves at cars which obviously these must be the pathetic attempts but I bet there are some real nasty ones where they must really get injured

Re: Insurance Scammers
I also now have dashcams, after an incident a couple of years ago when a nasty mare undertook me at a junction & damaged my car. She later claimed it was mutual fault, and despite photographs & other evidence it was a long uphill struggle to prove my case.
With regards to the "self incrimination" aspect, I did have some doubt originally, However I have 32gb memory cards in each camera, but the cameras are set to record in 3 min file lengths. They constantly over record the oldest files, so never run out.
If I ever needed to use footage, I would simply identify the specific file & only present that.
My theory is that any liberties I may make with road traffic legislation, they are not so prolific that they occur within every five mins..
