But you're Great Britain, and your population is 16 x that of NZ. If you are dubious about the 'talent pool' against NZ's, then are you conceding you aren't the "better little Island" ??StMarks wrote:Far larger population, I agree.kiwikrasher wrote:..... The ANZAC has a point.....
Then again, the 'New' in New Zealand is prison slang, which, all things considered, kinda sounds legit.

WTF does that even mean? NZ wasn't a convict colony if that is what you are getting at.D41 wrote: Then again, the 'New' in New Zealand is prison slang, which, all things considered, kinda sounds legit.

Re: What you watching?
Do you know what the "Great" in GB actually refers to Kiwi.?
It's not "Great" as in "fantastic", like most UK seem keen to purport. It's "Great" as in "Fat" (ironically, seeing as obesity is looking to be the most serious health threat to the next generation). It refers to the size of the main island. The Great (larger) of the British Isles.
Fwiw I don't recall implying that I believed that the UK was the "better" small island.? IMHO we are lesser in a number of respects, not just surface area.

New Zealand is where the better whities went to live. Australia was seen as being a bit common. That goes someway to explain why the Aussie accent is so much stronger.

Really??
I never thought the two accents sounded the same. I can see why people mistake them, but they're subtly disparate...like a Geordie and a Mackem...Norcal/Socal.....Boston/ NYC..etc.

They aren't subtly different, that's like telling a Scotsman he sounds Irish.D41 wrote:Really??

The convicts were sent to Aus because NZ hasn't been colonised at that stage, the Maoris were still putting up to much of a fight. As the last convicts were been sent out NZ had been colonised but it was far easier and cheaper to get them to Aus and there was no provision for them in NZ (established jails, etc). Not that we were convict free. A few boats had mutinies on the way to Aus and diverted to NZ and released convicts often made their way to NZ to try their hand at whaling and seal hunting.
St Marks, I was being cheeky, we had a heavy British influence in our education system in NZ in my childhood so I did think I knew the reasoning behind Great, my understanding was it was more 'Greater Britain' as in encompassing more than just England, but not as far reaching as the UK.

Well, seeing as we're stuck on History 101....Scots and Irish both spoke different dialects of Celtic, cobber.kiwikrasher wrote:They aren't subtly different, that's like telling a Scotsman he sounds Irish.D41 wrote:Really??
