That's one of my puzzles too. There comes a point where your comfortable, how does anything above that help.

I can only assume the obsession is partly due to the people who they have as their peers who 'compete' with them, so they have to have more to make themselves feel better / superior?

Must be terrible when your superyacht is smaller than theirs :(

Actually, it must...: (nod)

Imagine how unsatisfying their lives must be, when they are driven by an insatiable need to acquire more than anyone else. An ultimately impossible to sustain situation, even if they momentarily achieve it.

Despite their ruthlessness, cheating & bling they can never be as happy with "their lot" as say a grounded & balanced chap who throws it all in & goes to live a simple & contented life in an idilic part of the world. N'est pas.??

I was told that the trick to being truly happy is not to have whatever you want, but rather To want what you have..?

Granted.. material stuff is the only reason the majority are content.

The majority have enough comfort and thrills in their life to not really care about politics or what happens so long as they can go to Florida and have a 16 plate financed vehicle on the drive

It's all relative, I'm in the 4 young kids stage of life and happy with a bottle of wine and a cuddle with the missis at the end of the day. (considerably happier if non of the little blighters wake up in the night)

Money wise we're not broke by any means but the vast majority of it goes on family related stuff and a 4k motorbike made me very happy. Would a 40k Superleggy thing make me considerably happier even if I could afford 5 of them, probably not actually. At least not considerably happier.

There was a study on lottery winners a few years ago and it pretty much proved that they all returned to their normal state of happy/miserableness after about 3 years.

I don't think there's a right answer to this...everyone is different and will have different priorities...if XXX amount of money makes them happy then sobeit...whatever that magic amount is is irrelevant....BUT...leaving sommit for the kids is kinda important and one should try and imbue some fiscal sense into the little bastards while you can....prolly by example.

As far as lottery winners go, I think that's just evidentiary of their inexperience in handling large sums of moolah.

Did anyone download the excel spreadsheet attached to the Private Eye website page?

Do it and then sort the columns for your area and then be truly disappointed in how many local buildings are owned offshore. Loads of pubs are owned by offshore companies and a high proportion of City Centre shopping malls.

I did and it's mostly farms, old peoples homes and the odd private property which are mostly flats so probably rented out.

What I meant was winning the lottery made them happier, but after 3 years they were back where they started happiness wise.

Yeah, but three years of partying is a mighty long time to live high on the hog......back to normality would be a downer, but better than three years of staid boredomnessless.

Plus there'd be the memories...enough to wax rhapsodic about for years, burger in hand, and a large vat of Stolichnaya to ease the inner angst.

/sigh.

Hmm, contrary to popular opinion i don't want loads of "stuff", I would be very very happy if I lived in a house where we could have a spare room that didn't get filled with crap, where our car wasn't chosen purely for the best trade off between useability and cost, where both mine and Mrs Gee's children, sibs and parents were in trouble free houses with no mortgages and where I had sufficient funds to buy decent private healthcare for the rest of our lives. Everything after that would be a plus beyond reckoning, however a new(ish) bike once in a while would be cool. 8)

Mind you, I'm pretty happy now, so if my life just carries on in a similar vein for a good while yet that'll be a pretty good result. :)

880 acres of farmland that is adjacent to the village I live in is owned by Schenkers GMBH who are turning it into a giant industrial estate
