Stumbled across this on another website, a whole series of films by 'Jam Handy' from the 30's and 40's about the workings of cars.
"When in doubt use full throttle. It may not improve the situation but it will end the suspense ".

We've come a long way in terms of technology but the basics seem to be pretty much the same.
