I've had a lovely chilled day. Gym first, then to a fish shop to pick up some ordered chilli rasbora tropical fish. Came home, slobbed out, watched some TV, drank tea, ate bacon, played records, had cuddles on the sofa with my dog. Then I did some cooking before going to another fish shop for some black neon tetra. Cleaned out a couple of fish tanks, fed and watered the spiders, prepared a tandoori marinade for some chicken, did a bit of housework. Cooked dinner, went to the pub, came home.

Ordering a new phone. Between double trade-in value and 15% birthday voucher I'm getting the S23 Ultra for nearly half price :)

First day at MX this year. New camera and lens, it was like being a noob again.

Tried to spend the day collecting firewood.

Prices are getting ridiculous, paid $1100 for 6 cubic metres delivered (mixed hardwood) last year and 2 cube of it was still too wet to burn. So while it’s summer I decided to start collecting free wood people post on FB marketplace. Usually trees that have come down and been cut up.

So a local dude posted and had a pile of wood. But the photo absolutely didn’t show quite how large the logs were. 90% of it needs heavy machinery to move. I got a couple of trailer loads picking around the edges until my 12 yr old chainsaw rattled the air filter loose without me noticing, ran lean and then seized. It has been flogged and was just a cheap Chinese import so happy for the excuse to trade up to a decent Stihl 😎

Is Stihl a decent brand?? I see Stihl stuff in Home Depot and just read it as Stihl-means-"Steel"= cheap Chinese play on words.

As far as I know, Stihl is a German company, I don't think they use Chinese mystery metal in forestry equipment.

As for what I did today, I found out that my car hadn't dried out after washing and extracting the carpets and seats on Saturday, I was sure I left the front windows down just a bit but I was just coming off a 14 hour shift so I probably forgot to do that...

Stihl make great stuff. Between them and Makita, they make up 95% of my landscaper and general handy man father-in-law's tools and equipment and he very rarely has issues. In fact, his Stihl stone saw is a fecking beast! I love using that thing and it starts first time every time.

Fwiw I am a firm advocate for Stihl. Good quality, well designed and (most importantly imho) pretty much all spare parts are readily available.
Modern ethanol adulterated petrol is a bit of a killer for any small capacity ICE tools, but I always store mine with the fuel tanks totally dry these days to avoid issues. Bit of a faff emptying them & having to fill them again next time, but not as much as having to fit a new carb or fuel lines etc...

I've got an Stihl 084 AV chainsaw that I brought from a neighbouring farmer when I first moved here. It must be 30+ years old & (aside from looking like an antique) is as good and strong as anything you could buy today.

On an aside the county council workmen use Stihl strimmers round here. Last year I noticed that they were using battery powered ones.!
Being me, I had to quiz one of the operatives about this..
He told me that it was part of the council's strategy towards zero carbon.
I asked him how good they were, Just as good at cutting as the old petrol ones, he said, however the batteries were heavy and didn't last long enough. When I pointed out that the should carry extra batteries on their truck & just swap them when they went flat he laughed at me.
"We have to do that obviously" he said "we go through at least four batteries a day each. No, what I meant is they stop retaining any useful charge after a few months of daily use & get chucked & new batteries brought[/i

Zero carbon,,, hmmmmm

Yeah I’m a Stihl/Makita fan as well.

Prior to becoming financially bonded to my ex I always bought Makita/Stihl. But I sold it all up rather than ship it when I immigrated to Aus. Unfortunately she was a tight arse Nazi and I was never allowed to spend the dollar on quality.

Fast forward to getting out of that relationship and as the cheap shite has broken down it’s been replaced with quality.

Currently have a Stihl multipurpose unit (same motor, changeable tool) for pole chainsaw, hedger and line trimmer, and a Stihl blower. Also have corded hammer drill, cordless drill and pneumatic sanders in Makita. I also have a good collection of Ingersol-Rand pneumatic tooling, I used them all through my airforce aviation career and slowly built up my own collection post defence life.

I’ve been waiting for this chainsaw to die, but it lasted rather well. The chain brake was buggered, one bar attachment stud was stripped and the cut switch was cooked so had to stall it to stop it, so when it seized I wasn’t sad 😂

Whilst I was waiting for my mother to have her hospital appointment I decided to look at Twatter and read the comments.(Stupid Boy).. It's all well and good letting everyone have a say but some people on there are just on some different stuff.

Walked 6km from our hotel across the Habour Bridge in 35 deg heat to get to the exhibition centre to see a exhibition that apparently finished on the 5th 🤦🏻

Still a great day and amazing views but it was a ferry and Uber ride back via two bars 😂

Went to the beach at 5pm and it was still 30 deg! Enjoyed an ocean swim and the last couple hours of daylight.
