Red Arrows New Officer Commanding

Post by kiwikrasher »

Well talk about make me feel old.

When I was a Tech on No. 2 Sqn (A-4K Skyhawks) and posted in Australia for a few years, this bloke came through to do his conversion training from our trainer jets to the Skyhawks as a Flying Officer. We were a small unit away from home and exercised around Aussie regularly. As such, the pilots and ground crew socialised together freely, which isn't always the case when back home. I've had more than a couple of beers with this bloke. His nickname on Sqn was 'Boomer', but for the life of me I can't remember why.

When the Strike Wing of the New Zealand AIr Force was disbanded, a handful of pilots went to the RAF and RAAF (Australian Air Force). That was when I got out as well and moved back to Australia as a civi. Good to see he is still flying hard and enjoying his career.

I think what those guys do is so impressive, remember seeing them a few years back and my brother saying, not to anyone in particular, "you see these guys pulling manoeuvres that accurately and yet there are people out there that cant even parallel park" we all cracked up.
Remember: If in Doubt use Full Throttle, It may not make the situation any better, But it will end the suspense...

I had the great fortune of going for two flights in the Skyhawk while serving on 2 Sqn. These guys are truly talented. we spent a fair amount of time (on my second flight) at 200ft and 400 plus knots through valleys and over the sea (50 ft on the water). Is the only thing I've done that I've enjoyed more that track riding a 1000cc motorbike.

I've still got the HUD tape from my second flight, must hunt it out and get it converted to digital format some time.

Yeah me too! It's been about 15 years since I watched it. I just hope I can find it. It's on an 8mm tape and I'm pretty sure I made a VHS tape copy.. need to search some boxes in storage under the house.

Agreed with Cavetroll they are superb. One mishap and it wouldn't end with a pint down the old boozer. Always nice to see an old friend going onto a role like that
