Hiya guys


Just changed and balanced my front tyre on the tiger 800xc

However after inflating it it never gave a sound of POP that Would be seating of the bead..

Checked the tyre both sides and spun it on the balancer and all looks true and seated from inspecting he walls...

Is this possibly safe or should I definitely hear bead pop ?

Yikes....dunno mate...I've only done it twice, and both times the tyre looked good but wasn't....I bounced it around really good at 'half pressure' and had sprayed soapy water all over the beads, then finished off inflating it...the pop, when it came, was loud as feck and I nearly shat my pants.

Do you not have inner tubes on it being an XC? would that reduce that sound your looking for?

Yeah mate is inner tube and plastered in wd40 in addition to tyre mounting wax... But reading d41 post above now I'm nervous hmmmm

I wouldn't spray wd40 on the inner tube tbh.

I think it can swell and react with certain grades of rubber material.

Only put wd40 on bead and rim edge was a Bugger to put on

Have to ride back to London Monday with no pop sound on bead.. But to honest it looks mint..

It won't 'pop' if you have inner tubes.

I found this video very useful when trying to fit tight rubber stuff. So useful in fact i have watched in many times over.

Nice one mate thx feel bit better now. Was considering riding to garage delicately then removing valve pin then blasting with compressor. Now I'll just leave it

Blade is spot on....WD40 is BAAAD for rubber...it will dry it out, at which point it will indeed swell....not in a good way, it just deteriorates to all hell....don't ask how I know this, as I've never ever used it to clean a hard to find rubber part/gasket....I'd never do that...

The pop is the beads stretching onto and hitting the rim shoulders of a tubeless wheel, if your wheel hasn't popped look at the tyre bead - is it in good contact with the rim? If it is don't worry, if it isn't there's something wrong and come back and let us know.

If you've got tubed tyres they probably won't pop, but check the contact and concentricity between tyre and rim, if either look dodgy come back (with pics) and we'll help.

Re WD40 and rubber, this is straight from their site:

What equipment and what method did you use Rickster? I'm also interested in how easy (seating problems aside) you found it and how much your gear cost?

I'll post up photos mate. All in all very cheap considering the cost saving in long run in addition to gain some skills I guess. But in a nut shell

Manual balancer £35
Bead breaker £23
Wheel weights £3.50
Tyre irons two for £15 came with rim protectors
And a third tyre iron as was recommended.
Tyre mounting wax £5
Valve pin remover £3.50
Battery 12v tyre inflater £15

So far done the front. Took Me two hours and some swearing. But after some practice will speed up. Mainly because I was trying not to Bugger up my nice black spoked XC rims. Otherwise could be done lot faster.

In all 1-10 difficulty I'd say for a first attempt 7. I think the hardest hit was coming to terms how rough and heavy handed you need to be. Having the brake discs on didn't help as try not to put pressure on them.

Pulled valve pin to deflate.
Kneeled on tyre to push away from rim.
Clip on rim protectors
And carry out same as would on mountain bike/bicycle. And watched refer to YouTube now and again this guy very clear and helpful

Follow up .. That cheap bead breaker was useless.. Ready for the skip.. Need to spend on a decent one unfortunately. I used my knee on the front tyre and had to take rear to garage to break bead for me.. Looking at the abba one for 65 quid. But yet to see what recommendations are

Nice one Rickster that should pay for it's self in about 60,000 miles! Or three weeks for you!

Its very difficult to remove tubeless tyres from rims and to get them back over the rim to refit.

I did look into this at one point but after trying it once i decided it was not worth the hassle.

Yes to be fair is very rewarding feeling after you've done it for the first time. My front wheel felt perfect riding back to London. Am gob smacked. Definitely pays for itself after a couple fittings.. And can now feel confident buy tyres online at bigger discount and not have to pay fitting fees. Being tubed also not have to pay for valves. Winner.

Next task replace chain and sprocket sets.

Bit late to the thread mate, but if you have some tyre warmers you will find removing & fitting tyres far easier if you have warmed them.
