If the tyres are no good, have you though about cutting them off ? I'm sure if you deflate them, you could cut the carcass and get to the rim that way. I have an older knox one and I find it to be fine ....
I wear it over a tshirt or a long sleeve thermal and as its a mesh material, it allows it to breath and it stays in place.
The adjustable velcro waist band is good as well for my ever increasing and then decreasing torso. (blush)
